Which automatic transmissions does Mercedes use?

• 5G-Tronic (722.6) – classic 5-speed automatic transmission widely used from the 1990s to 2010 (E-Class W210, S-Class W220, ML W163, G-Class, Sprinter W906)
• 7G-Tronic (722.9) – 7-speed transmission used since 2003, mainly in rear-wheel-drive models: E W211/W212, CLS, ML W164, GL X164, R W251, C-Class W204
• 7G-DCT (724.0) – 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox installed in A, B, CLA, GLA models – series 176, 246, 117, 156
• 9G-Tronic (725.0) – modern 9-speed automatic used in newer models after 2014: E W213, C W205, GLC, GLE W166/W167, CLS C257

Suitable controllers for the above transmissions:

• EGS52 / EGS53 (722.6) – used in 5G-Tronic. A standalone control unit (in a separate casing), usually installed under the hood or inside the cabin
• VGS / VGS2 / VGS3 (722.9) – control unit integrated with 7G-Tronic mechatronics (mounted inside the transmission oil pan). Possible variants: VGS-NAG2, VGS2-FDCT, VGS3
• TCM 7G-DCT (724.0) – separate controller mounted on or near the gearbox
• TCM 9G-Tronic (725.0) – newer type of control unit, often integrated with the valve body, communicating with the ECU via CAN
• ISM modules – electronic gear selectors used in cars with 7G and 9G gearboxes, e.g. A1644460710, A0002703252 – mounted near the steering column or in the center console
  
  

   

How to choose the right control unit?
