How to choose the correct Smart engine ECU
The safest method is to compare all the numbers printed on the original ECU label. A Smart controller may display a Smart or Mercedes-Benz OEM number together with a Bosch, Siemens, Continental, Mitsubishi Electric or other manufacturer reference.
Before ordering, compare:

One available product is the A1351502379 / 1860A372 ECU for Smart ForFour 1.3. The module also carries Mitsubishi Electric markings such as E6T42487 and H4ZE.
This controller is intended for compatible first-generation Smart ForFour 454 applications. Customers searching for an “A1351502379 Smart ForFour ECU”, “1860A372 engine control unit” or “E6T42487 ForFour 1.3 engine computer” should compare all available markings with the original module.
The ForFour 454 shares some technical solutions with Mitsubishi vehicles, but this does not mean that any visually similar Mitsubishi controller can be installed. The complete part numbers, software, engine configuration and immobiliser system must be compatible.
Important information before installing a Smart ECU

VIRGIN does not automatically mean Plug & Play. In most applications, a clean module must be assigned to the vehicle using suitable diagnostic equipment. Depending on the model, this may require VIN entry, immobiliser initialisation, variant coding and configuration of the engine and gearbox.
Mercedes-based Smart models may require Star Diagnosis or Xentry for supported programming and adaptation procedures. The Smart ForFour 454 may use different diagnostic procedures because of its Mitsubishi-based electronics.
Smart ECU programming with Star Diagnosis or Xentry
Star Diagnosis and Xentry can be used for many diagnostic, coding and adaptation procedures in compatible Smart vehicles. The available functions depend on the generation, ECU family and software version.
Before programming, the vehicle should be connected to a stable battery support unit. A voltage drop or interruption can corrupt the ECU software, cause loss of communication or leave the vehicle unable to start.
