How to choose a Hyundai engine control unit

Compare the Hyundai number and the manufacturer number with the label on your unit. Hyundai and Kia use the same 2.0 CRDi engines, so some units fit both makes – but the numbers decide, not the make. The VIN helps confirm the vehicle version but does not replace the label numbers. If in doubt, send us a photo of the label.

IMMO OFF and VIRGIN – what is the difference?

  • IMMO OFF – the unit is prepared to work without an active immobiliser; after fitting it needs no programming or coding, and the immobiliser warning light may stay on,
  • VIRGIN for programming – the unit is cleared, but after fitting it must be paired with the car using a diagnostic tool (immobiliser, VIN, configuration),
  • cloning – instead of programming, the data from the old unit (flash and EEPROM) can be transferred, if it can be read.

According to the product descriptions, most Hyundai units in stock are IMMO OFF Plug & Play versions. The Delphi unit for the Terracan 2.9 CRDi is a VIRGIN version for programming or cloning.

Example Hyundai engine control units

Symptoms of a faulty engine control unit

  • the engine does not start although the starter and fuel supply work,
  • no communication with the engine control unit in diagnostics,
  • limp mode, sudden stalling or injection faults with no faulty sensors,
  • traces of moisture or corrosion on the connector or the housing.

Power supply, earths, fuses, relays, wiring and the immobiliser can cause similar symptoms – so run diagnostics before you buy. Control units for Kia are in the Kia engine control units category.
