Hyundai ECU engine controllers – tested modules for petrol and CRDi engines

A Hyundai ECU engine controller, also referred to as an ECM, engine computer or injection control unit, manages essential engine functions. Depending on the vehicle, it controls fuel injection, ignition timing, turbocharger boost, electronic throttle operation, exhaust gas recirculation, particulate filter functions and communication with the immobiliser and other control modules.

ECUSale offers tested replacement ECUs for popular Hyundai models, including the i20, i30, i40, ix20, Tucson, Santa Fe and Terracan. The current range includes original Bosch, Delphi and Kefico controllers for petrol and CRDi diesel engines. Availability and preparation options vary according to the exact product.

Need help identifying the correct Hyundai ECU?

Send us a photograph showing the entire label of the original controller, together with the VIN, engine details and gearbox type. We will compare the Hyundai OEM number, manufacturer reference and preparation requirements.

Ask us to check compatibility

Hyundai i30 engine control units

The Hyundai i30 has been fitted with numerous ECU versions for petrol and CRDi diesel engines. Depending on the production year, engine and gearbox, the vehicle may use a Bosch or Kefico controller with different hardware, software and immobiliser data.

Hyundai i30 ECU 0281013402 / 39106-2A715

For selected Hyundai i30 1.6 versions, the range includes the Bosch ECU 0281013402 / 39106-2A715. This tested used controller is prepared as IMMO OFF Plug & Play.

Before ordering, compare both the Hyundai number and the Bosch reference with the original module. Another ECU fitted to an i30 1.6 may use different software and should not be selected solely by engine capacity.

Hyundai i30 1.6 Kefico ECU 39112-2B202

The current range also includes the Kefico 39112-2B202 / 9001040172KC ECU for Hyundai i30 1.6. This module is prepared as IMMO OFF.

Kefico and Bosch controllers are not automatically interchangeable, even when they are used in vehicles with the same model name and engine capacity. The complete label, connections, hardware and software must match the required application.

Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRDi engine ECU

For selected Santa Fe diesel vehicles, we offer the 0281013584 / 39113-27825 ECU for Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2. This Bosch controller is prepared as IMMO OFF.

Different generations and power versions of the Santa Fe 2.2 CRDi may use different ECU references. The engine capacity and vehicle model do not confirm compatibility without comparing the complete Hyundai and Bosch numbers.

Hyundai Tucson 2.0 CRDi engine ECU

The 39110-27425 / Bosch 0281014245 ECU for Hyundai Tucson 2.0 CRDi is available as an IMMO OFF engine controller.

Several similar Bosch units were used in Hyundai and Kia 2.0 CRDi vehicles. References such as 39110-27292, 39110-27305, 39110-27315 and 39110-27425 identify different versions. They should not be treated as interchangeable without checking the hardware and software.

Looking for a Hyundai Tucson or Santa Fe ECU?

Do not select the controller using only the vehicle model and engine capacity. Compare the complete Hyundai number, manufacturer reference, ECU family and software version.

View Hyundai ECUs Check the ECU numbers

Hyundai i20 engine control units

The Hyundai i20 range includes different Bosch engine controllers for petrol and diesel applications. One available example is the 0281015496 / 39111-2A050 ECU, prepared as IMMO OFF.

Another option is the 39111-03710 / 9001140421KF Hyundai i20 ECU, offered as IMMO OFF Plug & Play. The preparation method and compatibility of each product should be checked separately.

Hyundai Terracan 2.9 CRDi Virgin ECU

The range includes the 39101-4X740 / R0410G189A Delphi ECU for Hyundai Terracan 2.9 CRDi. Unlike many IMMO OFF products in this category, this controller is prepared as Virgin.

A Virgin controller has been reset so that it can be assigned to a compatible vehicle. The correct adaptation procedure must be followed after installation. Depending on the vehicle configuration, diagnostic programming or coding may also be necessary.

Can a Kia ECU be used in a Hyundai?

Hyundai and Kia vehicles sometimes share engines, electronic platforms and ECU families. Some Bosch controllers are listed for applications from both manufacturers, but this does not mean that every visually identical module is interchangeable.

Compatibility depends on the complete OEM number, manufacturer reference, hardware version, software, engine code, gearbox and immobiliser system. If you are searching for a related controller, see our Kia ECU engine controllers.

How to select the correct Hyundai ECU

The replacement controller should be selected using all references printed on the original ECU label. The model, production year, fuel type and engine capacity help identify the vehicle but are not sufficient on their own.

Before ordering, compare:

  • the complete Hyundai or Hyundai-Kia OEM number,
  • the Bosch, Delphi or Kefico manufacturer reference,
  • the complete ECU family and hardware version,
  • software and calibration identifiers,
  • engine capacity, power output and engine code,
  • petrol or CRDi diesel fuel system,
  • emissions standard and market specification,
  • manual or automatic gearbox configuration,
  • immobiliser system and ECU preparation method.

The VIN helps identify the vehicle but does not replace the numbers taken directly from the original engine controller. Alternative or superseded references should always be verified before purchase.

Hyundai ECU IMMO OFF – how does it work?

IMMO OFF means that immobiliser authorisation has been disabled inside a compatible engine controller. A correctly prepared ECU can allow the engine to start without the standard synchronisation between the ECU, key and immobiliser module.

After installation, an immobiliser warning light or fault code may remain in another vehicle module. This does not necessarily indicate an ECU problem if the engine starts and operates correctly. IMMO OFF is not available for every controller, so the preparation method depends on the ECU family.

Hyundai Virgin ECU

A Hyundai ECU prepared as Virgin has had the identification and immobiliser data of its previous vehicle removed. It must then be assigned to the compatible vehicle using the correct diagnostic procedure.

A Virgin module is not always ready to operate immediately after connection. Depending on the vehicle, the installation may require immobiliser synchronisation, VIN programming, injector coding, gearbox configuration or other adaptations.

Once a Virgin ECU has been assigned to a vehicle, it should not be installed experimentally in another car. Stable battery voltage should be maintained throughout the first programming and adaptation procedure.

Hyundai ECU Plug & Play and cloning

A controller described as Plug & Play has been prepared to reduce the amount of work required after installation. The exact preparation may vary between products, so the individual listing must always be checked.

ECU cloning involves transferring compatible data from the original controller to a hardware-compatible replacement. Depending on the ECU type, this may include EEPROM, FLASH or processor memory. The process can preserve the VIN, immobiliser data, engine software and vehicle configuration.

Cloning does not make an unrelated controller compatible. The replacement hardware and all essential part numbers must still be suitable for the vehicle.

Common symptoms of a faulty Hyundai ECU

  • the engine cranks but does not start,
  • intermittent starting or unexpected stalling,
  • no communication with the engine controller,
  • limp mode and reduced engine power,
  • injector, ignition or turbocharger fault codes,
  • immobiliser or CAN communication errors,
  • incorrect electronic throttle operation,
  • faults appearing after water ingress, a short circuit or voltage surge,
  • a no-start condition after interrupted ECU programming.

These symptoms do not prove that the ECU itself is faulty. Similar problems can be caused by damaged wiring, poor earth connections, fuses, relays, sensors, injectors, fuel pressure, low battery voltage or another control module. The vehicle should be diagnosed correctly before purchasing a replacement ECU.

FAQ – Hyundai ECU engine controllers

Does a replacement Hyundai ECU need identical part numbers?

The safest option is a controller with the same complete Hyundai OEM and manufacturer references. Some alternative numbers may be compatible, but the hardware, software, engine and gearbox configuration must be verified.

Will a standard used Hyundai ECU work after it is connected?

Usually not without preparation. A standard used controller normally contains the VIN, immobiliser information and configuration of the previous vehicle. It may require resetting, programming, cloning or an available IMMO OFF solution.

What does IMMO OFF mean in a Hyundai ECU?

IMMO OFF disables immobiliser authorisation within a compatible engine controller. It can allow the engine to run without standard immobiliser synchronisation. A warning light or stored immobiliser fault may remain in another module.

What is the difference between Virgin and IMMO OFF?

A Virgin ECU is reset and must be assigned to the vehicle. An IMMO OFF controller has immobiliser authorisation disabled. These are different preparation methods and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Can a Kia ECU be installed in a Hyundai?

Some Hyundai and Kia vehicles share compatible controllers, but all OEM numbers, hardware, software, engine details, transmission and immobiliser requirements must be compared. A similar casing does not confirm compatibility.

Is a Plug & Play Hyundai ECU always ready after connection?

The amount of work required depends on the product and preparation method. Always read the individual listing and confirm whether any coding, adaptation or post-installation checks are required.

Can a damaged Hyundai ECU be cloned?

Cloning may be possible when the required memory data can still be read from the original controller and a compatible replacement is available. Severe circuit or processor damage may prevent a complete read.

Does a no-start condition prove that the Hyundai ECU is faulty?

No. Starting problems can also result from the immobiliser, wiring, battery voltage, relays, sensors, injectors, fuel pressure or another electronic module. Diagnostic testing should be completed before replacing the ECU.

What information should I send before ordering?

Send a clear photograph of the complete ECU label, the VIN, Hyundai model and production year, engine capacity and code, fuel type, gearbox version and any diagnostic fault codes.
