The Continental SID208 engine control unit you have purchased has been prepared as a VIRGIN Plug & Play ECU. When installed correctly in a compatible vehicle, it automatically retrieves the vehicle configuration and pairs with the factory immobiliser system.
Please read the following instructions before the first start-up. Preparing the vehicle correctly helps prevent interruptions during the automatic ECU pairing process and avoids unnecessary warranty claims involving a fully functional control unit.
Essential checks before the first start-up
- Fully charge the vehicle battery or connect a regulated battery support unit.
- Make sure the BCM/BSI module is working correctly and belongs to the vehicle.
- Use a fully functional key that is correctly paired with the vehicle.
- Compare all part numbers on the original ECU with those on the replacement unit.
- Repair the cause of any previous water damage, short circuit or ECU failure.
- Carry out a complete diagnostic scan of all vehicle modules after installation.
Important: the first pairing process can only be completed once. After the ECU has been successfully paired, it stores the data of that specific vehicle and is no longer in VIRGIN condition. Do not test or start it in another vehicle beforehand.

1. Which vehicles use the Continental SID208 ECU?
Continental SID208 engine control units are mainly fitted to light commercial vehicles, including:
- Peugeot Boxer,
- Citroën Jumper.
These modules are used in selected vehicles equipped with 2.2 HDi and 2.2 Multijet engines. Exact compatibility depends on the Continental part number, OEM reference, software version, vehicle specification and gearbox type.
Do not select a replacement ECU using only the vehicle model, production year, engine size or appearance of the casing. Always compare every reference printed on the label of the original engine control unit before ordering.
2. How do we prepare the SID208 ECU before dispatch?
Every Continental SID208 ECU supplied by ECUSale is refurbished, inspected and tested in a vehicle. The module is approved for dispatch only after its correct operation has been confirmed.
Inspection of the casing and internal electronics
The casing is restored, while the electronic circuit board is inspected for physical damage, moisture contamination, corrosion and other faults that could affect diagnostic communication or engine operation.
Professional ECU resealing
Once the refurbishment process has been completed, the casing is resealed using a high-quality silicone sealing compound. The electronics inside the module also receive an additional protective coating.
This protection improves the ECU’s resistance to moisture, but it does not make the control unit completely waterproof.
Testing the SID208 ECU in a vehicle
The control unit is installed in our dedicated test vehicle. During the test, we check:
- diagnostic communication with the engine ECU,
- correct engine start-up,
- stable engine operation,
- communication with the BCM/BSI body control module,
- communication with other vehicle systems,
- the presence of fault codes related to ECU operation.
After testing, all data from our test vehicle is removed. The ECU is returned to VIRGIN condition and only then prepared for delivery to the customer.
3. What does SID208 VIRGIN Plug & Play mean?
VIRGIN ECU
The data linking the ECU to its previous vehicle has been removed. The module is ready to complete its first automatic pairing process in the customer’s vehicle.
Plug & Play
When the part numbers match and the vehicle has a working electrical system, correctly configured BCM/BSI and recognised key, no manual ECU programming or cloning of the original control unit is normally required.
What happens during the first start-up?
- The engine ECU establishes communication with the BCM or BSI module.
- It retrieves the vehicle configuration data.
- The immobiliser system recognises the key paired with the vehicle.
- The BCM/BSI sends the information required to authorise engine start-up.
- The ECU stores the configuration and pairs permanently with the vehicle.
- Once the process is complete, it operates like a factory-installed control unit.
VIRGIN does not mean IMMO OFF. The factory immobiliser remains active and continues to protect the vehicle. The ECU must communicate correctly with the original anti-theft and authorisation system.
4. How should the vehicle be prepared before installing a SID208 ECU?
The first start-up is the most important stage of the SID208 VIRGIN ECU installation. Before connecting the replacement module, inspect the vehicle carefully and ensure that the battery voltage will remain stable.
1. Fully charge the vehicle battery
The battery must be fully charged. A significant voltage drop must not occur while the ECU is storing the vehicle configuration.
In a professional workshop, we recommend using a regulated battery support unit, especially if the vehicle has previously experienced problems with the battery, starter motor or charging system.
2. Check the BCM/BSI body control module
The engine ECU retrieves the vehicle configuration from the body control module, referred to as the BCM or BSI depending on the vehicle manufacturer.
The BCM/BSI should:
- belong to the vehicle or be correctly paired and configured for it,
- communicate with a suitable diagnostic tool,
- contain the correct vehicle configuration,
- recognise the vehicle key,
- show no signs of water damage, electrical short circuits or internal failure.
If the BCM/BSI has been replaced but has not been correctly programmed or paired with the vehicle, the automatic SID208 ECU adaptation process may not be completed.
3. Prepare a working, correctly paired key
The first start-up must be performed using a key that is correctly paired with the vehicle and recognised by the immobiliser.
A damaged transponder, unpaired key or faulty immobiliser antenna can prevent the engine from starting even when the replacement engine ECU is fully functional.
4. Inspect the vehicle wiring and electrical system
Before connecting the SID208 ECU, check:
- the ECU power supply wiring,
- ground connections and earth points,
- fuses and relays,
- CAN communication wiring,
- the condition of connector pins and plugs,
- signs of moisture or corrosion inside the connectors,
- drainage channels and protective covers around the ECU installation area.
If the previous ECU was damaged by a short circuit, water ingress or an electrical fault, the original cause of the failure must be repaired before another module is installed.
5. Correct SID208 ECU installation procedure
- Switch off the ignition and disconnect the battery in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure.
- Remove the damaged engine control unit.
- Inspect the plugs, wiring and connector pins for damage, corrosion and moisture.
- Compare every reference on the original ECU with the numbers on the replacement unit.
- Install the SID208 ECU in its original factory mounting position.
- Connect the plugs and make sure that all locking mechanisms are fully secured.
- Refit the original plastic ECU protective cover.
- Connect a fully charged battery or a regulated battery support unit.
- Use a working key that is correctly paired with the vehicle.
- Switch on the ignition and allow the electronic modules to establish communication.
- Start the engine.
- After the engine starts, carry out a complete diagnostic scan of all vehicle modules.
In a correctly functioning vehicle, the SID208 ECU will automatically retrieve the required configuration and should not require additional coding.
The engine did not start?
Do not repeatedly attempt to start the engine with a weak battery. First check the battery voltage, diagnostic communication with the ECU, immobiliser status and stored fault codes.
6. Why might a SID208 VIRGIN ECU fail to pair with the vehicle?
An unsuccessful first start-up does not automatically mean that the replacement ECU is faulty. In many cases, the cause is found in the vehicle wiring, BCM/BSI module, key recognition system or factory immobiliser.
Faulty or incorrectly configured BCM/BSI
The automatic pairing process may fail if the BCM/BSI:
- does not communicate with the diagnostic tool,
- is damaged or affected by water ingress,
- contains an incorrect vehicle configuration,
- has been replaced but not correctly paired with the vehicle,
- does not recognise the key.
Missing ECU power supply or ground
A lack of diagnostic communication may be caused by a blown fuse, faulty relay, damaged power supply wire, poor ground connection or corroded connector.
Before assuming that the engine ECU is faulty, measure the power supply and ground directly at the ECU connector using the correct vehicle wiring diagram.
Damaged CAN bus communication
A broken wire, short circuit, corroded connector pin or fault in another electronic module can prevent the SID208 ECU from communicating with the BCM/BSI and other vehicle systems.
Key or immobiliser fault
If the immobiliser system does not recognise the key, the engine ECU will not receive start authorisation. A key symbol, immobiliser warning light or vehicle security message may appear on the instrument cluster.
Voltage drop during the first ECU pairing process
A voltage drop while the ECU is storing the vehicle data may:
- interrupt the automatic pairing process,
- cause incomplete configuration data to be stored,
- prevent the engine from starting,
- require the ECU to be reset to VIRGIN condition again.
In this situation, contact ECUSale. The control unit may need to be inspected, tested and reset to VIRGIN condition again by our technical department.
7. How to protect the SID208 ECU from water and moisture damage
A refurbished SID208 ECU is supplied with a restored and professionally resealed casing. However, it is not designed to operate under water or withstand direct exposure to large amounts of moisture.
To reduce the risk of water damage:
- always refit the original plastic ECU protective cover,
- check the mounting points and the ECU installation area,
- do not leave the bonnet open during rain,
- do not clean the engine compartment with a high-pressure water jet,
- regularly clean the windscreen scuttle drains,
- check that water does not collect around the ECU mounting position,
- repair the original cause of any previous water ingress.
Damage caused by water ingress, incorrect installation or a faulty vehicle electrical system is not covered by the warranty.
8. What should you do if the vehicle does not start after SID208 ECU installation?
Do not return the ECU before carrying out a proper diagnostic inspection. First establish whether the diagnostic tool can communicate with the engine ECU and identify the fault codes stored in each vehicle module.
Before reporting a problem, prepare the following information:
- a complete DTC scan from all vehicle modules,
- the full descriptions of the fault codes, not only the code numbers,
- the make and model of the diagnostic tool used,
- confirmation of whether the starter motor cranks the engine,
- confirmation of whether diagnostic communication with the engine ECU is possible,
- information about whether the vehicle started normally before the original ECU failed.
If there is no communication with the ECU, also provide:
- a photograph of the instrument cluster with the ignition switched on,
- a photograph showing the immobiliser warning light or key symbol,
- a clear photograph of the label on the installed ECU,
- the measured power supply and ground values at the ECU connector,
- confirmation that the fuses, relays and CAN bus wiring have been checked.
No communication with the engine ECU is often caused by a wiring fault, missing power supply, poor ground, BCM/BSI failure or CAN bus problem rather than by a tested replacement control unit.

10. Frequently asked questions about SID208 VIRGIN ECUs
Does a SID208 VIRGIN ECU require programming?
When the part numbers are compatible and the vehicle has a working BCM/BSI, correct wiring and recognised key, manual programming is not normally required. During the first start-up, the ECU automatically retrieves and stores the vehicle configuration.
Does VIRGIN mean that the immobiliser has been disabled?
No. VIRGIN and IMMO OFF are two different ECU preparation methods. A VIRGIN ECU continues to work with the factory immobiliser and pairs with the vehicle security system during the first start-up.
Can the SID208 ECU be installed with a weak battery?
No. A voltage drop during the first configuration write can interrupt the pairing process and may require the ECU to be reset to VIRGIN condition again.
Can a different vehicle key be used during installation?
The key must be correctly paired with the vehicle and recognised by the immobiliser. An unpaired or damaged key may prevent the engine from starting.
Can the VIRGIN ECU be tested in another vehicle first?
No. During the first successful start-up, the ECU stores the vehicle data and is no longer in VIRGIN condition. It should only be installed in the vehicle for which it was purchased.
What should be checked if there is no communication with the ECU?
Check the ECU power supply, ground connections, fuses, relays, connectors and CAN bus wiring. The BCM/BSI module should also be scanned and inspected.
Is the refurbished SID208 ECU waterproof?
