Honda ECU engine controllers – tested replacement modules

A Honda ECU engine controller, also known as an engine control unit, engine computer, ECM or PCM, manages fuel injection, ignition, turbocharger operation, emissions systems and communication with the immobiliser and other electronic modules.

At ECUSale you can find original, used and tested engine control units for models including the Honda Civic, Accord, CR-V and FR-V. The current range includes Bosch diesel controllers for selected 2.2 i-CTDi engines and a Delphi module for the Honda CR-V 2.0 i-VTEC petrol engine.

The correct ECU must be selected using the complete part numbers printed on the original controller. Similar-looking modules are not automatically interchangeable, even when they are fitted to vehicles with the same engine capacity.

Not sure which Honda ECU you need?

Send us a clear photograph of the entire label from your original controller together with the vehicle VIN. We will compare the Honda 37820 reference, manufacturer number and engine specification and help identify a compatible replacement.

Send your Honda ECU details

Honda CR-V 2.2 i-CTDi ECU engine controllers

Several Bosch engine controller variants were used in the Honda CR-V 2.2 i-CTDi. The vehicle model and engine capacity alone are not enough to select the correct module. Both the Honda reference and the complete Bosch number must be checked.

0281012095 and 37820-RMA-E16

The 0281012095 / 37820-RMA-E16 Honda CR-V 2.2 i-CTDi ECU is an original Bosch engine controller for selected diesel versions.

The module is prepared for reconfiguration and requires the appropriate programming and immobiliser adaptation. Depending on the selected product option, a different form of preparation may also be available. Check the individual product description before ordering.

0281012131 and 37820-RMA-E03

Another version is the 0281012131 / 37820-RMA-E03 ECU for Honda CR-V 2.2 i-CTDi. Although its housing may resemble other Bosch controllers used in the same model, its part numbers and software identification are different.

The numbers 0281012095 and 0281012131 should therefore not be treated as automatically interchangeable. The original ECU label must be checked before purchase.

0281013633 and 37820-R06-E15

The range also includes the 0281013633 / 37820-R06-E15 Honda CR-V 2.2 ECU. This example demonstrates why the Honda number alone may not be sufficient: the 37820-R06-E15 reference also appears with another Bosch number in an ECU listed for the Honda Civic.

For this reason, compare the complete Bosch number, additional label codes, hardware and software version as well as the Honda OEM reference.

Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi ECU

The Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi also uses several Bosch ECU versions. Differences may relate to the production year, emissions standard, transmission, vehicle equipment or engine software.

0281012660 and 37820-RSR-E14

The 0281012660 / 37820-RSR-E14 Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi ECU is a tested Bosch engine controller. Additional identification, including codes printed beside the primary numbers, should be compared with the original module.

0281013407 and 37820-R06-E15

Another available unit is the 0281013407 / 37820-R06-E15 ECU for Honda Civic 2.2.

The same Honda reference 37820-R06-E15 is also shown on a Bosch 0281013633 controller listed for the Honda CR-V. This does not mean that the two ECUs are directly interchangeable. The Bosch number and all additional identifiers must also match.

0281015482 and 37820-RSR-E41

Selected Civic 2.2 diesel versions use the 0281015482 / 37820-RSR-E41 Bosch ECU. Before purchase, compare both main numbers and any hardware, software or calibration references visible on the original controller.

Looking for a Honda Civic or CR-V 2.2 ECU?

Do not select the controller using only the vehicle model, engine capacity or Honda 37820 number. Compare the complete Bosch reference and every additional code on the original label.

Honda Accord 2.2 i-CTDi ECU

The 0281012583 / 37820-RBD-E93 ECU for Honda Accord 2.2 i-CTDi is an original Bosch engine controller intended for selected Accord diesel versions.

A controller from another 2.2 i-CTDi Honda model should not be considered compatible solely because the engine type is similar. Vehicle-specific software, immobiliser data and configuration may differ between the Accord, Civic, CR-V and FR-V.

Honda FR-V 2.2 i-CTDi ECU

For selected Honda FR-V diesel versions, the range includes the 0281012250 / 37820-RJL-E13 Honda FR-V 2.2 i-CTDi ECU.

Before ordering, verify the Bosch reference 0281012250, Honda number 37820-RJL-E13 and the additional identification printed on the original ECU housing.

Honda CR-V 2.0 i-VTEC Delphi ECU

Petrol-powered Honda vehicles use different engine management systems from the 2.2 i-CTDi diesel models. The current range includes the 37820-RZV-E63 ECU for Honda CR-V III 2.0 i-VTEC.

This Delphi controller must be selected using its complete identification and the details of the original vehicle. A petrol ECU cannot be substituted with one of the Bosch diesel modules listed in this category.

How to read a Honda ECU part number

Honda engine controller labels usually contain several references. The most recognisable Honda number begins with 37820, but the full suffix is essential. It may appear with or without hyphens, for example:

  • 37820-RMA-E16 or 37820RMAE16,
  • 37820-RMA-E03 or 37820RMAE03,
  • 37820-RJL-E13 or 37820RJLE13,
  • 37820-RBD-E93 or 37820RBDE93,
  • 37820-RSR-E14 or 37820RSRE14,
  • 37820-RSR-E41 or 37820RSRE41,
  • 37820-R06-E15 or 37820R06E15,
  • 37820-RZV-E63 or 37820RZVE63.

A Bosch diesel ECU also carries a ten-digit reference beginning with 028101. Both numbers should be checked because the same Honda reference can occasionally appear alongside different Bosch numbers or vehicle applications.

How to select the correct Honda ECU

The safest approach is to compare all information printed on the original controller. The vehicle model, year and engine capacity help identify the application, but they do not replace the ECU numbers.

Before ordering, compare:

  • the complete Honda 37820 OEM reference,
  • the Bosch or Delphi manufacturer number,
  • all additional calibration and production codes,
  • the hardware and software version,
  • vehicle model and production year,
  • engine type, code, capacity and power output,
  • petrol or diesel fuel system,
  • emissions specification,
  • manual or automatic transmission,
  • immobiliser system and vehicle equipment.

The VIN helps identify the vehicle configuration, but it does not replace a clear photograph of the original ECU label.

Does a used Honda ECU require programming?

An ordinary used engine controller may retain the immobiliser, VIN and configuration data of the donor vehicle. It may therefore prevent the engine from starting when installed without preparation.

Depending on the ECU family, vehicle and selected product option, the replacement may require:

  • immobiliser adaptation,
  • VIN or software programming,
  • configuration with Honda HDS or i-HDS,
  • programming through a compatible J2534 Pass-Thru interface,
  • cloning data from the original ECU,
  • Virgin or another compatible preparation.

The exact status and preparation requirements are stated in the individual product description. Do not assume that every tested used ECU is ready to operate immediately after connection.

Honda ECU cloning

Cloning transfers the necessary data from the original engine controller to a compatible replacement module. Depending on the ECU, this may include immobiliser information, the VIN, configuration and engine software.

Cloning may be possible if the original ECU still permits a complete and correct memory read. The replacement controller must also have compatible hardware and part numbers. Copying data does not make an incompatible ECU suitable for the vehicle.

If the original controller is severely damaged or cannot be read, the replacement may instead need to be prepared and programmed directly in the vehicle.

Honda ECU Virgin and IMMO OFF options

A Virgin ECU has been cleared of the previous vehicle’s immobiliser and identification data and is prepared for adaptation. Programming is normally required before the controller can operate correctly in the new vehicle.

IMMO OFF means that immobiliser authorisation is disabled in a compatible controller. This option is not available for every Honda ECU and should only be selected when explicitly offered in the product description.

Depending on the vehicle and preparation method, an immobiliser warning or diagnostic fault may remain in another module. Confirm the exact product variant and installation requirements before ordering.

Common symptoms of a faulty Honda ECU

  • the engine cranks but does not start,
  • intermittent starting or unexpected stalling,
  • no diagnostic communication with the ECU,
  • irregular engine operation or misfiring,
  • injector-control faults,
  • lack of fuel-pump control,
  • turbocharger, EGR or DPF-related faults,
  • no response from the accelerator pedal,
  • limp mode and reduced engine power,
  • immobiliser or CAN communication errors,
  • failure after water ingress, a short circuit, voltage surge or interrupted programming.

These symptoms do not automatically confirm an ECU fault. Similar problems may be caused by wiring, connectors, power or earth supplies, fuses, relays, sensors, injectors, the immobiliser system or another electronic module. The vehicle should be correctly diagnosed before the engine controller is replaced.

FAQ – Honda ECU engine controllers

Does a replacement Honda ECU need identical numbers?

The safest choice is an ECU with the same complete Honda OEM number and matching Bosch or Delphi reference. Alternative numbers may sometimes be compatible, but this must be confirmed before purchase.

Is the Honda 37820 number sufficient to identify an ECU?

Not always. The complete 37820 reference, manufacturer number and additional label codes should be checked. For example, 37820-R06-E15 currently appears with two different Bosch numbers and vehicle applications.

Can Bosch 0281013407 replace 0281013633?

These controllers should not be treated as automatically interchangeable, even though both may carry the Honda reference 37820-R06-E15. Compare the complete original label, software, vehicle model and configuration.

Will a used Honda ECU work after being connected?

Not necessarily. A used controller may contain immobiliser and configuration data from its previous vehicle. It may require cloning, programming, immobiliser adaptation or another compatible preparation.

Can a Honda ECU be cloned?

Many Honda controllers can be cloned if the required data can still be read from the original unit. The replacement must also have compatible hardware and part numbers.

What equipment is used to programme a Honda ECU?

Depending on the vehicle and controller, programming may be completed using Honda HDS, i-HDS, a compatible J2534 Pass-Thru interface or specialist bench and boot programming equipment.

Are Honda Civic, Accord, CR-V and FR-V 2.2 ECUs interchangeable?

No. Although these models may use related 2.2 i-CTDi engines, the ECU hardware, software, immobiliser data and configuration can differ. Select the replacement using the complete numbers from the original controller.

Which Honda models are currently covered by this category?

The current range includes selected engine controllers for the Honda Civic, Accord, CR-V and FR-V, primarily with 2.2 i-CTDi diesel engines, together with a CR-V 2.0 i-VTEC petrol ECU.

What information should I send before ordering?

Send a clear photograph of the complete ECU label, the VIN, vehicle model and production year, engine capacity and power, transmission type, diagnostic fault codes and information about whether the original controller still communicates.
