How to choose an ECU for a Saab 9-3?

  • the full Saab number on the label, e.g. 55565020 – including any S suffix,
  • the manufacturer number, e.g. Bosch 0281015212,
  • engine, year and gearbox type.

Model and engine size alone are not enough – the Saab 9-3 used different ECUs and software depending on engine version and year. The VIN helps, but does not replace the numbers on the label.

What is needed after fitting a VIRGIN ECU?

A VIRGIN ECU contains no data from the previous car, but it is not Plug & Play. After fitting it must be programmed and matched to the immobiliser – usually with a Tech-2 with Saab software or a compatible tool, using the CAR PASS code. For selected numbers, data can also be cloned from the old ECU.

Before you replace the ECU

A no-start, no diagnostic communication or limp mode do not always mean a faulty ECU. Check power and earth connections, fuses, relays, the wiring loom and connectors – an undetected wiring fault can damage the next module.

Pay special attention to the Bosch, Siemens, Magneti Marelli, Continental, or vehicle manufacturer's OEM part number. If you are unsure, simply send us a photo of your existing module or provide your vehicle's VIN, and our specialists will help you identify the correct part.
