Saab 9-3 petrol ECU – Delphi Trionic 8
Petrol versions of the Saab 9-3 II commonly use the Trionic 8 engine management system. This system integrates engine operation with the vehicle’s immobiliser and other control modules. For this reason, an ordinary used ECU taken from another car will not normally work after simply being connected.
A replacement Trionic 8 controller must be correctly matched, prepared and then programmed to the vehicle. If data can still be read from the original unit, cloning may also be possible.
55353231 and 55353231S Saab 9-3 2.0 Turbo ECU
The 55353231 / 55353231S Saab 9-3 engine ECU is a Delphi controller used in selected Saab 9-3 2.0 Turbo petrol versions. The module is supplied in a cleared Virgin condition and is ready for vehicle programming.
Before ordering, compare both references with the original controller. Engine version, transmission, model year and software configuration may also affect compatibility.
55565020 and 55565020S Trionic 8 ECU
The 55565020 / 55565020S Trionic 8 ECU for Saab 9-3 is offered as a tested Virgin controller ready for programming or cloning.
This module may be found in selected Saab 9-3 petrol versions, including vehicles described as 1.8t and 2.0 Turbo. The Saab 1.8t designation does not necessarily indicate a 1.8-litre engine: selected 1.8t versions use a 2.0-litre B207 engine. Compatibility must therefore be determined from the ECU numbers and vehicle configuration rather than the model badge alone.
Programming a Virgin Trionic 8 controller normally requires Tech 2 with a CANDi module and suitable Saab software, such as TIS2000 or GlobalTIS. Access to the necessary security information may also be required.
55355292 and 5WK9379 Saab 9-3 ECU
Another available petrol controller is the 55355292 / 5WK9379 Virgin ECU for Saab 9-3 II. It is intended for selected petrol-engine applications and requires adaptation using Tech 2 after installation.

Saab 9-3 1.9 TiD and TTiD Bosch ECU
Diesel versions of the Saab 9-3 use different Bosch engine control units depending on the engine output, turbocharger system, model year and emissions specification. A controller for a 1.9 TiD engine should not be assumed to fit a 1.9 TTiD solely because the engine capacity is the same.
0281015212 and 55568896 for Saab 9-3 1.9 TTiD
The Bosch 0281015212 / 55568896 ECU is intended for selected Saab 9-3 1.9 TTiD Twin Turbo applications. It is associated with the Bosch EDC16C39 system and selected Z19DTR 180 hp versions.
The offered controller is prepared as Virgin and requires VIN programming and immobiliser adaptation. It must not be treated as a Plug & Play unit. Compatibility should be verified by matching both the Saab/GM OEM number 55568896 and Bosch number 0281015212.
0281017592 and 55577896 for Saab 9-3 1.9 TTiD
The range also includes the 55577896 / Bosch 0281017592 Saab 9-3 1.9 TTiD ECU. This tested controller is supplied in a cleared Virgin condition and requires programming after installation.
This unit is used in selected Saab 9-3 II Sport Sedan, SportCombi and Cabriolet versions. However, body style alone does not determine compatibility. The numbers 55577896 and 0281017592 must be compared directly with the original ECU.
How to select the correct Saab engine controller
The most reliable method is to compare all references printed on the original ECU label. The vehicle model and engine capacity are not sufficient because several controllers and software variants may have been fitted to apparently similar Saab 9-3 vehicles.
Before ordering, check:
- the complete Saab or GM OEM number,
- the Bosch, Delphi or Siemens manufacturer number,
- the ECU family, such as Trionic 8 or EDC16C39,
- the hardware and software version,
- the engine code, capacity and power output,
- whether the engine is petrol, TiD or TTiD,
- single- or twin-turbo configuration,
- manual or automatic transmission,
- production year and emissions specification.
The VIN is useful when identifying the vehicle, but it does not replace the numbers taken directly from the original ECU.
What does Virgin mean for a Saab ECU?
A Virgin Saab ECU has been cleared of the previous vehicle’s identification and security data. It is prepared so that it can be programmed and assigned to another compatible vehicle.
Unlike some self-adapting ECU systems, a Virgin Saab controller normally requires a diagnostic programming procedure after installation. Depending on the controller and vehicle, this may include:
- adding the ECU to the vehicle’s security system,
- programming the correct VIN and software,
- immobiliser synchronisation,
- variant and equipment configuration,
- injector coding in selected diesel applications,
- clearing and checking diagnostic trouble codes.
Tech 2 with the correct Saab software is commonly required. A valid CAR PASS or other security information may also be necessary. Before purchasing the ECU, confirm that the workshop carrying out the installation has suitable equipment and experience with Saab programming.
Saab ECU cloning
Cloning involves transferring the required memory and configuration data from the original controller to a compatible replacement. Where a complete and correct read is possible, cloning may preserve the VIN, immobiliser data, engine software and vehicle configuration.
Depending on the ECU type, the procedure may require EEPROM, FLASH and processor data. If the original controller has serious internal damage or cannot be read correctly, cloning may not be possible. A Virgin replacement must then be programmed directly to the vehicle.
A cloned ECU should still have matching hardware and compatible part numbers. Transferring data does not make an electrically or mechanically incompatible controller suitable for the vehicle.
Does an ordinary used Saab ECU work after connection?
An ordinary used Saab ECU normally remains paired with the donor vehicle. Connecting it to another car may result in a no-start condition, immobiliser faults or communication errors.
The controller must be correctly prepared before installation. Depending on its type and condition, the appropriate solution may be:
- resetting it to Virgin status and programming it with Tech 2,
- cloning data from the original ECU,
- preparing it specifically for the vehicle from supplied memory files.

Common symptoms of a faulty Saab ECU
- the engine cranks but does not start,
- intermittent starting problems, especially when the ECU is hot,
- unexpected stalling while driving,
- no diagnostic communication with the engine controller,
- limp mode or reduced engine power,
- ignition, injector or throttle-control faults,
- turbocharger boost-control errors,
- EGR or DPF-related faults in diesel versions,
- immobiliser or CAN communication errors,
- failure following water ingress, a voltage surge or interrupted programming.
These symptoms do not prove that the ECU itself is defective. Similar faults may be caused by the wiring harness, power supply, earth connections, relays, fuses, ignition cassette, sensors, CIM, immobiliser system or another control module. The vehicle should be properly diagnosed before an ECU is purchased.

Will a Virgin Saab ECU work immediately after installation?

What equipment is required to programme a Saab 9-3 ECU?

Can a Saab Trionic 8 ECU be cloned?
