Alfa Romeo VIRGIN control unit – how does it work after fitting?
A control unit marked VIRGIN has been cleared of the previous car's data and restored to a state that allows it to be assigned to another vehicle. In many control units used in Alfa Romeo cars this process happens automatically.
After a compatible VIRGIN ECU is fitted and the ignition is switched on, the control unit reads the start authorisation data from the Body Computer module, saves it in its memory and assigns itself to the car. If the control unit numbers match, and the key, immobiliser and Body Computer work correctly, standard manual immobiliser programming is not required.
Important: after the first assignment the control unit is no longer VIRGIN. Do not fit it in another car as a test. During the first start-up, make sure the battery voltage is stable and do not interrupt the procedure.
Automatic immobiliser assignment does not always mean that all the additional vehicle settings will be configured without diagnostics. Depending on the model, equipment and type of control unit, PROXI alignment, writing the configuration or clearing diagnostic faults may be needed.
VIRGIN, Plug & Play or cloning the control unit?
How the ECU is prepared depends on the design of the control unit and the condition of the car's electronics:
- VIRGIN – the control unit is cleared of the previous vehicle's data and assigns itself to the car after correct fitting;
- Plug & Play – the module is prepared for a specific vehicle based on the data or files supplied;
- cloning – the data from the old ECU is transferred to a compatible, working replacement control unit;
- module for programming – needs configuring with a suitable diagnostic device or programmer.
The available preparation method always depends on the specific control unit number. Not every module supports all of the options listed.

How to choose an Alfa Romeo engine control unit?
The basis for choosing is all the numbers on the label of the old control unit. The car model, year of manufacture or engine size alone are not enough, because one vehicle version may have used different hardware and software variants of the ECU.
Before buying, compare:
- the control unit manufacturer number, e.g. Bosch or Magneti Marelli,
- the Alfa Romeo or FCA group OEM number,
- the ECU type designation,
- the hardware and software version,
- the engine type, capacity and power,
- the gearbox type and the vehicle equipment.
The VIN helps to verify the vehicle, but it does not replace the numbers on the label of the old ECU.
Bosch and Magneti Marelli control units for Alfa Romeo
Alfa Romeo cars use, among others, Bosch, FPT and Magneti Marelli control units. Control units from these manufacturers may look similar but differ in numbers, memory, processor, immobiliser configuration and engine software.
Compatibility must be confirmed before buying. Fitting an ECU with incorrect markings can cause a no-start, CAN communication faults, incorrect engine running or problems with equipment coding.
Body Computer modules for Alfa Romeo
The engine control unit works together with the Body Computer module, which is involved in start authorisation and the operation of the vehicle equipment, among other things. In the event of immobiliser or communication problems, diagnose not only the ECU but also the Body Computer, the electrical system, the key and the power supply.

FAQ – Alfa Romeo engine control units
Does an Alfa Romeo VIRGIN control unit program itself?
In many models, yes. After fitting, a compatible VIRGIN control unit reads the immobiliser data from the Body Computer module and assigns itself to the car when the ignition is first switched on or the engine is first started. This requires the correct choice of ECU and a working Body Computer, immobiliser and key.
Is a diagnostic computer needed for a VIRGIN control unit?
Assigning the immobiliser itself usually does not require manual programming. However, diagnostics may be needed to clear faults, check the configuration, perform PROXI alignment or code selected vehicle functions.
Can a VIRGIN control unit be tested in another car first?
This should not be done. During the first fitting, the control unit may save the car's data and stop being a VIRGIN module. It should only be fitted in the vehicle it was correctly matched to.
Will a used Alfa Romeo control unit work without preparation?
