Kia engine control units – tested ECU modules
A Kia engine control unit, also called the ECU or engine computer, controls fuel injection, ignition, the turbocharger, the EGR valve and the DPF filter, and communicates with the other modules of the car.
At ECUSale we offer original engine control units for models such as the Kia Ceed, Sportage, Sorento, Carens, Rio, Picanto, Venga, Soul, Optima and Carnival. The current range consists mainly of Bosch modules prepared as IMMO OFF Plug & Play.
Not sure which Kia control unit will fit?
Send a photo of the whole label of the old ECU and the VIN. We will check the Kia number, the Bosch designation and the control unit version before you place your order.

Kia IMMO OFF Plug & Play control unit – what does it mean?
IMMO OFF means the immobiliser function is disabled in the engine control unit. A correctly matched ECU can then start the engine without the standard pairing of the control unit to the car's immobiliser and keys.
Plug & Play means the module has been electronically prepared for fitting. The control unit must still have matching numbers, the right hardware version and software suited to the engine.
After fitting an IMMO OFF ECU, standard immobiliser programming should not be needed. You still need to:
- fit the control unit correctly and check its connectors,
- ensure the correct power supply and ground for the ECU,
- clear old diagnostic fault codes,
- check the wiring and the cause of the previous module's failure,
- carry out additional coding if the vehicle's equipment or configuration requires it.
In some cars, after IMMO OFF the immobiliser warning light may stay on or a start authorisation fault may remain stored in another module. If the engine starts and runs correctly, this does not have to mean the prepared ECU is faulty.
Popular Kia Ceed engine control units
The Kia Ceed used different control units for petrol and diesel engines. Modules may look similar but differ in software, the engine they support and the immobiliser system.
Kia Ceed 1.6 16V control unit 39110-2B662
For selected petrol Kia Ceed 1.6 16V versions we offer the Bosch 0261S05604 / 39110-2B662 IMMO OFF Plug & Play control unit. The module does not need standard immobiliser programming, but both numbers should be compared with the old ECU.
Kia Ceed 1.6 CRDi control unit 39103-2A710
For selected diesel versions the 0281013569 / 39103-2A710 IMMO OFF control unit for Kia Ceed is available. Before buying, check the full Kia designation, the Bosch number, the engine power and the software version.
If you are searching for a “Kia Ceed 1.6 CRDi engine control unit without programming” or a “Kia Ceed IMMO OFF Plug & Play ECU”, do not choose a product by engine size alone. The Ceed 1.6 CRDi used several different modules.
Kia Sportage 1.7 and 2.0 CRDi engine control units
The Kia Sportage is one of the models for which we offer the most engine control units. Individual generations and versions of the 1.7 and 2.0 CRDi engines may use different Bosch units, so always check the full set of numbers.
Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi control unit 39104-4A301
One of the popular modules is the Bosch EDC16C39 0281015506 / 39104-4A301 control unit for Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi. The ECU has been prepared as IMMO OFF, so in a compatible car it does not need immobiliser programming.
Kia Sportage 1.7 CRDi control unit 39120-2A051
For the 1.7 CRDi engine there is the 0281017695 / 39120-2A051 Kia Sportage IMMO OFF control unit. It is a solution for customers searching for phrases such as “Kia Sportage 1.7 CRDi ECU won't start” or “Kia Sportage 39120-2A051 control unit without immobiliser coding”.
Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi control unit 39101-2F571
For selected Sportage 2.0 CRDi versions we also offer the Bosch 0281018848 / 39101-2F571 IMMO OFF Plug & Play control unit. Compatibility should be confirmed by both numbers and the data of the old control unit.
Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDi engine control unit
For the Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDi the Bosch EDC16C39 0281015802 / 39114-4A481 IMMO OFF control unit is available. The module is prepared for fitting without standard immobiliser programming in a car with the right version of electronics.
The Sorento 2.5 CRDi also uses other ECU numbers. The phrase “Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDi engine control unit” is not enough to choose the right product; the Kia designation and the Bosch number must be compared.
How to choose an engine control unit for a Kia?
Correct selection is based on the complete numbers from the label of the old control unit. The car model, year, engine size or power are not enough, because Kia may have used several different ECUs in similar vehicle versions.
Before buying, check:
- the Kia OEM number, e.g. 39110-2B662 or 39101-2F571,
- the manufacturer number, e.g. Bosch 0261S05604 or 0281018848,
- the full ECU type designation, e.g. Bosch EDC16C39,
- the hardware and software version of the control unit,
- the engine capacity, power and code,
- the gearbox type,
- the emission standard and the car's equipment.
The VIN helps identify the vehicle, but it does not replace the markings on the old ECU.
Kia control unit numbers – with and without hyphens
Kia OEM numbers can be written in several forms. For example, the number 39110-2B662 may also appear as 391102B662, and 39101-2F571 as 391012F571.
Both forms can refer to the same part, but always check the manufacturer number and the other markings on the label as well. This also makes it easier to find a product whether the number is entered with a hyphen or without any separators.
Bosch control units for Kia cars
The current Kia range consists mainly of Bosch engine control units. These include modules used in 1.6 CRDi, 1.7 CRDi, 2.0 CRDi and 2.5 CRDi engines and in selected petrol engines.
A similar housing and identical connectors do not mean compatibility. Two Bosch control units can differ in processor, memory, engine map, injector control, immobiliser system and gearbox configuration.
Can a Hyundai control unit fit a Kia?
Hyundai and Kia share many engine and control unit designs. However, this does not mean that every Hyundai ECU can be fitted to a Kia.
Compatibility must be confirmed by the OEM number, Bosch number, hardware version, software, engine, gearbox and immobiliser system. If the numbers are not identical, confirm before buying whether they are a compatible replacement.
Kia control unit failure – repair or replace?
The right solution depends on the type of damage. A control unit after flooding, a voltage surge or a short circuit may need to be opened and the electronics checked. In some cases repair is possible, while in others replacement with a tested module is the safer option.
If the memory of the old ECU is accessible, data cloning can also be considered. With our current Kia range, the alternative is a compatible control unit prepared as IMMO OFF Plug & Play, which does not need standard immobiliser programming.
Most common symptoms of a faulty Kia ECU
- the engine does not start or starts irregularly,
- the car cuts out while driving,
- no diagnostic communication with the control unit,
- limp mode and reduced power,
- uneven engine running,
- injector, ignition or turbocharger faults,
- immobiliser faults and no start authorisation,
- numerous CAN communication faults,
- problems after flooding, a short circuit or reversed battery connection,
- no start after failed ECU programming.
These symptoms do not always mean the control unit has failed. Similar problems can be caused by damaged sensors, injectors, wiring, fuses, relays, a weak battery or a missing power supply or ground. Before replacing the ECU, the whole car should be diagnosed.

FAQ – Kia engine control units
Does a Kia IMMO OFF control unit need programming?
It does not need standard immobiliser programming. However, the control unit must have matching numbers, the right hardware version and the correct software. After fitting, clear old faults and check that the vehicle works properly.
Does a Kia Plug & Play control unit work after plugging it in?
A correctly matched IMMO OFF Plug & Play control unit is prepared for fitting without immobiliser pairing. Correct fitting, working wiring and matching numbers are still required.
Can the immobiliser warning light stay on after IMMO OFF?
In some models the immobiliser warning light or fault may remain stored in another module. If the engine starts and runs correctly, this does not have to mean the control unit is faulty.
Does a Kia engine control unit need identical numbers?
The safest choice is an ECU with an identical Kia OEM number and a matching manufacturer number. Some numbers may have replacements, but their compatibility should be confirmed before buying.
Which control unit fits a Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi?
The Sportage 2.0 CRDi used many different Bosch control units. Compare the Kia number starting with 391, the Bosch number, engine power, model year and software.
Can a Hyundai ECU be fitted to a Kia?
Only if the hardware numbers, software and configuration match. The shared design of Hyundai and Kia vehicles does not mean all control units are directly interchangeable.
Can a damaged Kia control unit be cloned?
If the data of the old ECU can be read, it can be transferred to a compatible control unit. The alternative is a compatible module prepared as IMMO OFF Plug & Play.
What information should I send before buying a Kia control unit?
Ideally send a photo of the whole label of the old ECU, the VIN, the car model and year, the engine capacity and power, the gearbox type and the fault codes from diagnostics.
