Kia ECU engine controllers – tested modules for petrol and CRDi engines

A Kia ECU engine controller, also referred to as an ECM, engine computer or injection control unit, manages the operation of the petrol or diesel engine. Depending on the vehicle, it controls fuel injection, ignition timing, turbocharger boost, electronic throttle operation, exhaust gas recirculation, particulate filter functions and communication with the immobiliser and other control modules.

ECUSale offers tested engine controllers for popular Kia models, including the Ceed, Sportage, Sorento and Carens. The current range consists primarily of original Bosch engine control units for petrol and CRDi diesel engines. Many available modules have been prepared as IMMO OFF or IMMO OFF Plug & Play, but the exact condition and preparation method must always be checked on the individual product page.

Need help identifying the correct Kia ECU?

Send us a clear photograph of the entire label on the original controller, together with the VIN, engine details and gearbox type. We will compare the Kia OEM and Bosch numbers and explain the preparation requirements.

Ask us to check compatibility

Popular Kia Ceed engine control units

The Kia Ceed range includes several different ECU families for petrol and CRDi diesel engines. Controllers that look similar or belong to the same Bosch family may contain different software, immobiliser data and vehicle configurations.

Kia Ceed 1.6 petrol ECU 0261S05604 / 39110-2B662

For selected petrol versions, the range includes the 0261S05604 / 39110-2B662 ECU for Kia Ceed 1.6 16V. This used Bosch controller is prepared as IMMO OFF Plug & Play.

The Kia number and Bosch reference should both be compared with the original module. The engine capacity alone does not confirm compatibility because different 1.6 petrol versions may use different hardware or software.

Kia Ceed 1.6 CRDi ECU 0281015438 / 39103-2A716

For selected diesel vehicles, we offer the 0281015438 / 39103-2A716 Bosch EDC16C39 ECU for Kia Ceed 1.6 CRDi. The controller is prepared as IMMO OFF, allowing the compatible engine to operate without standard immobiliser authorisation.

Before ordering, compare the full 39103-2A716 reference, Bosch number, engine version, transmission and software requirements. Another EDC16C39 controller is not automatically interchangeable.

Kia Sportage ECU engine controllers

The Kia Sportage has been fitted with numerous engine controllers across different generations. Available products include Bosch ECUs for 1.7 CRDi and 2.0 CRDi engines as well as selected petrol applications.

Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi ECU 0281012970 / 39114-27335

The 0281012970 / 39114-27335 Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi ECU is a Bosch EDC15C7 controller prepared as IMMO OFF. It is intended for a compatible vehicle with matching hardware and software specifications.

Several Bosch controllers were used in Sportage 2.0 CRDi models. References such as 39113, 39114 and 39110 may identify different versions and should not be treated as interchangeable without verification.

Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi ECU 0281018848 / 39101-2F571

A newer option is the 0281018848 / 39101-2F571 ECU for Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi. This controller is offered as IMMO OFF Plug & Play.

Despite the Plug & Play preparation, the complete numbers, connector layout, engine specification and ECU software should still be confirmed before installation.

Looking for a Kia Sportage ECU?

Do not select the controller using only the model and engine capacity. Compare the complete Kia number, Bosch reference and ECU software version with the original module.

View Kia ECUs Check the ECU numbers

Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDi engine ECU

The range also includes controllers for older Kia Sorento diesel vehicles. One example is the 0281015802 / 39114-4A481 Bosch EDC16C39 ECU for Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDi, prepared as IMMO OFF.

Different Sorento production years and engine variants may use closely related controllers with different Kia references. Always compare the complete label rather than relying on the EDC16C39 designation alone.

Can a Hyundai ECU be used in a Kia?

Kia and Hyundai vehicles sometimes share engines, electronic platforms and Bosch ECU families. Some controllers are listed for applications from both manufacturers, but this does not mean that all visually identical modules are interchangeable.

Compatibility depends on the complete OEM number, Bosch reference, hardware version, installed software, engine code, gearbox and immobiliser system. If you are searching for a related module, see our Hyundai ECU engine controllers.

How to select the correct Kia ECU

The correct replacement should be selected using all numbers printed on the original ECU label. The model, production year, fuel type and engine capacity help identify the vehicle, but they are not sufficient on their own.

Before ordering, compare:

  • the complete Kia or Hyundai-Kia OEM number,
  • the Bosch or other manufacturer reference,
  • the ECU family, such as EDC15C7 or EDC16C39,
  • hardware and software identifiers,
  • engine capacity, power output and engine code,
  • petrol or CRDi diesel fuel system,
  • emissions standard and market specification,
  • manual or automatic gearbox configuration,
  • immobiliser system and preparation method.

The VIN is useful for identifying the vehicle, but it does not replace the references taken directly from the original engine controller.

Kia ECU IMMO OFF – what does it mean?

IMMO OFF means that immobiliser authorisation has been disabled in a compatible engine controller. A correctly prepared ECU can allow the engine to start without the standard synchronisation between the ECU, key and immobiliser module.

After installation, an immobiliser warning light or fault code may remain in another vehicle module. This does not necessarily indicate an ECU fault if the engine starts and operates correctly. Not every Kia ECU supports IMMO OFF, so the available preparation method depends on the controller family.

Kia ECU Plug & Play and cloning

A Kia ECU described as Plug & Play has been prepared to reduce the amount of work required after installation. The exact preparation may vary, so the product description should always be checked before fitting the module.

ECU cloning involves transferring compatible memory data from the original controller to a replacement with matching hardware. Depending on the ECU type, the required data may include EEPROM, FLASH or processor memory. Cloning can preserve the VIN, immobiliser information, engine software and vehicle configuration.

Data transfer cannot make an incompatible controller suitable for the vehicle. The replacement hardware and all essential part numbers must still match.

Kia Virgin ECU and diagnostic programming

A controller prepared as Virgin has had the identification data of its previous vehicle removed. It must then be assigned or programmed to the compatible vehicle using an appropriate diagnostic procedure.

Depending on the Kia model and ECU generation, installation may require immobiliser synchronisation, VIN programming, injector coding, configuration of the gearbox or other adaptations. The specific product description determines whether an ECU is Virgin, IMMO OFF, Plug & Play or requires programming.

Programming should be carried out with suitable diagnostic equipment and a stable battery support unit. The ignition should not be switched off and the procedure should not be interrupted while data is being written.

Common symptoms of a faulty Kia ECU

  • the engine cranks but does not start,
  • intermittent starting or unexpected stalling,
  • no diagnostic communication with the ECU,
  • limp mode and reduced engine power,
  • injector, ignition or turbocharger fault codes,
  • immobiliser or CAN communication errors,
  • incorrect electronic throttle operation,
  • problems following water ingress, a short circuit or voltage surge,
  • a no-start condition after interrupted ECU programming.

These symptoms do not confirm an ECU failure. Similar faults can result from damaged wiring, poor earth connections, fuses, relays, sensors, injectors, the fuel system, low battery voltage or another electronic module. The vehicle should be diagnosed before a replacement controller is purchased.

FAQ – Kia ECU engine controllers

Does a replacement Kia ECU need identical part numbers?

The safest option is a controller with the same complete Kia OEM and manufacturer numbers. Alternative or superseded references may be compatible, but the hardware, software, engine and gearbox configuration must be verified.

Will a standard used Kia ECU work after it is connected?

Usually not without preparation. A standard used ECU normally contains immobiliser and configuration data from the previous vehicle. It may require resetting, programming, cloning or an available IMMO OFF solution.

What does IMMO OFF mean in a Kia ECU?

IMMO OFF disables immobiliser authorisation within a compatible engine controller. This can allow the engine to run without standard ECU-to-immobiliser synchronisation. A warning light or stored immobiliser fault may remain in another module.

Is every Kia IMMO OFF ECU Plug & Play?

No. IMMO OFF describes the immobiliser preparation, while Plug & Play describes how the replacement has been prepared for installation. Check the individual product description to determine whether additional work is required.

Can a Hyundai ECU be fitted to a Kia?

Some Kia and Hyundai vehicles share compatible controllers, but the manufacturer numbers, hardware, software, engine code, transmission and immobiliser system must all be compared. A similar casing or connector does not confirm compatibility.

Which ECU is fitted to a Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi?

Several Bosch ECU versions were used in Sportage 2.0 CRDi vehicles, including different EDC15 and EDC16 variants. The correct unit depends on the production year, engine version and complete numbers on the original controller.

Can a faulty Kia ECU be cloned?

Cloning may be possible if the required memory data can still be read from the original controller and a hardware-compatible replacement is available. Severe electronic or processor damage may prevent a complete read.

Does a no-start condition prove that the Kia ECU is faulty?

No. Starting faults may also be caused by the immobiliser, wiring, battery voltage, relays, sensors, fuel pressure, injectors or another control module. Diagnostic testing should be completed before replacing the ECU.

What information should I send before ordering a Kia ECU?

Send a clear photograph of the complete ECU label, the VIN, Kia model and production year, engine capacity and code, fuel type, gearbox version and any diagnostic fault codes.
