Bosch engine control units
A Bosch engine control unit manages the engine, fuel injection system, turbocharger, boost pressure and emission control systems. Bosch manufactures many ECU families for both petrol and diesel engines. The most common include:
- Bosch EDC15 – control units used in older diesel engines,

Bosch VIRGIN, IMMO OFF, Plug & Play and CLONE ECUs
The method of preparing an ECU depends on its design, the immobiliser system and the requirements of the specific vehicle. Not every ECU can be prepared in every available version.
Bosch VIRGIN ECU
A VIRGIN ECU has its immobiliser data cleared and is prepared for reassignment to another vehicle. Some units synchronise automatically after correct installation, while others require adaptation or programming with a suitable diagnostic tool.
Bosch IMMO OFF ECU
In the IMMO OFF version, the immobiliser function in the engine control unit is disabled. Selected ECUs can therefore start the engine without being coded to the vehicle’s immobiliser system. In some vehicles, an immobiliser warning light or message may remain visible on the instrument cluster even though the engine starts and operates correctly.
Bosch Plug & Play ECU
A Plug & Play ECU is prepared for a specific application and usually does not require the immobiliser to be programmed again. After installation, it may still be necessary to clear fault codes, adjust the equipment configuration, code the injectors or perform a basic adaptation.
Bosch ECU cloning
The CLONE service involves transferring data from the original ECU to a working replacement unit. Depending on the ECU type, the transferred information may include EEPROM and FLASH data, immobiliser data, the VIN and the vehicle configuration. Cloning is possible provided that the required data can be read correctly from the original ECU.

Bosch ABS modules and ESP systems
Bosch also manufactures ABS pumps and control units, ESP modules, sensors and electronic brake control systems. The ABS module communicates with components including the wheel speed sensors, engine control unit, steering angle sensor and electronic stability control system.
After replacing an ABS pump or control unit, it may be necessary to transfer data, code the module, enter the vehicle configuration or calibrate the sensors. The exact procedure depends on the specific system and vehicle model.
Bosch AdBlue modules and pumps
Bosch electronics are also used in SCR systems responsible for dosing AdBlue fluid and reducing nitrogen oxide emissions. Our range includes AdBlue pumps and modules for trucks.
Before purchasing an AdBlue module, compare the part numbers and inspect the other system components, including the wiring, hoses, AdBlue injector, temperature sensors and NOx sensors. A fault code stored in the control unit does not always mean that the module itself is defective.
Typical symptoms of faulty Bosch electronics
The symptoms depend on the type of module. The most common problems include:
- no diagnostic communication with the control unit,
- the engine failing to start,
- the engine cutting out while driving,
- no control of the injectors or engine components,
- immobiliser or CAN bus faults,
- limp mode and reduced engine power,
- ABS or ESP system faults,
- AdBlue system faults and restrictions on restarting the vehicle,
- damage caused by water, moisture, corrosion or voltage surges,
- diesel fuel entering the ECU connector or internal electronics.
Before replacing a module, check its power supply, ground connections, wiring, CAN communication and the associated sensors and actuators. Installing a working control unit without removing the original cause of the failure may result in repeated damage to the electronics.
Water damage and Bosch ECU failures
One common cause of ECU failure is water, moisture, oil or fuel entering the connector and the interior of the control unit. This may lead to corrosion, short circuits, loss of communication or damage to the control circuits.

How do I select the correct Bosch ECU?

Does a Bosch VIRGIN ECU program itself automatically?
