BMW CAS, FEM, BDC, FRM and JBE modules
BMW uses several types of electronic modules to manage vehicle access, engine start authorisation and electrical body functions. The most common systems include CAS, FEM, BDC, FRM and JBE. The module fitted to a particular vehicle depends on its generation, equipment specification and electrical architecture.
Our current range mainly includes BMW CAS4 modules manufactured by Continental and FEM modules manufactured by Lear. Depending on the product, a module may be supplied with one key or a complete set of keys. Availability of individual CAS, FEM, BDC, FRM and JBE versions depends on current stock.
What do BMW CAS, FEM and BDC modules control?
CAS – Car Access System is primarily involved in key recognition, ignition activation and engine start authorisation. In newer BMW generations, many of these functions were expanded and integrated into the FEM – Front Electronic Module and BDC – Body Domain Controller.
Depending on the model, equipment and module version, these units may be involved in:
- key recognition and engine start authorisation,
- ignition activation and Start/Stop button operation,
- central locking and vehicle access,
- door, window and mirror control,
- selected comfort and convenience functions,
- communication with other vehicle control modules.
BMW CAS4 Continental modules
Our range includes several versions of the BMW CAS4 module. One example is the BMW CAS4 CA 61356809372 Continental 5WK50920BBR with keys. Another available version is the BMW CAS4 CA 61359282116 / 5WK50520GBR module with key.
Vehicles fitted with a CAS4 CG system may use different references, including 61359359013 / 9359013 Continental 5WK50822HBR. A similar housing does not confirm compatibility. Both the BMW OEM number and the Continental reference should be checked before ordering.
BMW FEM Lear modules
The FEM combines a wide range of vehicle access and body electronics functions. Available versions include the BMW FEM 8709211 Lear 5CU21BF02 module with key and the BMW FEM 9383178 Lear 596316F00 module with key.
Modules with similar BMW part numbers may still differ in hardware, software, equipment configuration or their additional Lear references. For this reason, all identification details on the original module should be compared before placing an order.
What are BMW FRM and JBE modules used for?
The FRM – Footwell Module controls selected electrical body functions, including lighting, electric windows and certain comfort features. The JBE – Junction Box Electronics works with the vehicle’s electrical system and is involved in controlling and connecting a number of electrical circuits.
The exact range of functions depends on the BMW generation and module version. Before replacing an FRM or JBE, the vehicle should be diagnosed and the full part number of the original unit should be checked.
How to find a BMW module by part number
The most reliable way to find the correct module is to enter the full BMW OEM number or the manufacturer’s reference from the label into the shop search box. Examples include 61356809372, 5WK50920BBR, 8709211 and 5CU21BF02. It is worth searching for both references because a module may be listed under its BMW number as well as its Continental or Lear number. Part numbers can be entered without spaces, dots or hyphens. If your reference does not appear in the search results, send us a clear photo of the complete label and we will check whether a suitable module is available.
Common symptoms of a faulty BMW body control module
Problems with a CAS, FEM, BDC, FRM or JBE module may cause symptoms such as:
- no response from the vehicle when using the key,
- difficulty switching on the ignition or starting the engine,
- no response from the Start/Stop button,
- incorrect central locking operation,
- lighting, indicator, window or mirror faults,
- no diagnostic communication with the module,
- several electrical fault codes appearing at the same time.
These symptoms do not necessarily mean that the module itself is faulty. Similar problems can be caused by a weak battery, a missing power supply or earth connection, damaged wiring, moisture, corroded connectors or a fault in another control unit. A complete vehicle diagnosis is recommended before replacing any module.
Programming, synchronisation and data transfer
A used BMW module may require programming, coding, synchronisation with other control units or a transfer of data from the original unit. This is particularly important for CAS, FEM and BDC modules because they work with the keys and the vehicle’s start authorisation system.
If the original module can still be read correctly, it may be possible to transfer the required data to a replacement unit. The correct preparation method must be determined individually using the part numbers, vehicle details and condition of the original module. A module supplied with a key is not necessarily ready to start the vehicle without further programming or synchronisation.
