Master and slave in the Audi Q7 4.2 TDI
The 4.2 TDI V8 has two engine ECUs working together: a master mounted horizontally and a slave mounted vertically. Both carry the same number 4L0910409 / 0281013013. In practice it is almost always the master that gets replaced – water from the wiper area gets under the scuttle panel, runs down a sensor cable into the ECU and damages the electronics. The slave fails very rarely.
Vehicle compatibility
The ECU fits the Audi Q7 4L 4.2 TDI V8. The model list does not decide fitment either way – what matters is that Bosch number 0281013013 and Audi number 4L0910409 match the label on your ECU. A different number, e.g. 0281015165 (4L0910409D), means different software, so it will not replace this unit.
