Citroën engine control units – tested ECU computers
A Citroën engine control unit, also called the ECU or engine computer, manages the operation of the engine. Based on information from the sensors, it controls the fuel quantity, the injection system, ignition in petrol engines, boost pressure and selected parts of the emission control system, among other things.
The ECU also communicates with the BSI module, the immobiliser system, the instrument cluster, the transmission control unit and the rest of the car's electronics. That is why an ordinary used control unit from another vehicle usually does not work correctly without prior preparation.
At ECUSale we offer original, used and tested ECU engine control units for:
- Citroën C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5,
- Citroën Berlingo and Jumpy,
- Citroën Jumper,
- Citroën DS3, DS4 and DS5,
- other Citroën cars with petrol and diesel engines.
Popular Citroën engine control units
The current range includes, among others, Bosch control units for 1.4, 1.6 VTi and 1.6 THP petrol engines:
These products are examples from the current range. Before buying, open the specific product page and compare all the numbers with the label of the control unit fitted in the car.
How to choose a Citroën engine control unit?
The most important criterion when choosing an ECU is the complete set of markings on the label of the old module. The same model, engine and year may have used different hardware and software versions.
Before ordering, check:
- the full control unit manufacturer number,
- the full PSA OEM number,
- the ECU family, e.g. SID208, EDC16, EDC17, MEV17.4 or MED17.4,
- the HW/SW hardware and software version,
- the engine code, capacity and power,
- the gearbox type,
- the emission standard and the car's equipment,
- the VIN as supporting information.
The VIN helps check the vehicle's factory configuration, but it should not replace checking the numbers on the label of the ECU actually fitted.
Citroën Jumper 2.2 HDi – Continental SID208 and Visteon control units
Depending on the version, the Citroën Jumper 2.2 HDi uses Continental SID208 control units or Visteon modules. The SID208 units in our range are prepared as VIRGIN Plug & Play and grouped in the collection of SID208 control units for Jumper and Boxer 2.2 HDi. We offer the Visteon modules as IMMO OFF; according to the product descriptions, they fit the Jumper, Boxer and Fiat Ducato 2.2.
Selected products:
- SID208 S180129101N / 9691854880 – Boxer, Jumper 2.2 HDi, VIRGIN Plug & Play
- SID208 S180129001E / 9679061580 – Boxer, Jumper 2.2 HDi, VIRGIN Plug & Play
- Visteon 9663289180 / 9661256980 – Boxer, Jumper, Ducato 2.2, IMMO OFF
- Visteon 9666089980 / 9666360280 – Boxer, Jumper, Ducato 2.2, IMMO OFF
SID208 control units should be chosen by the complete PSA and manufacturer numbers. A similar housing or shared use in vans does not mean they are automatically interchangeable.
How does a SID208 VIRGIN control unit work?
A SID208 VIRGIN unit is cleared of the previous vehicle's data and prepared for its first assignment. After correct fitting, it can take the immobiliser data from the car's BSI or BCM module and store it in the ECU memory.
We describe the process in detail in the guide: SID208 VIRGIN and Plug & Play – first fitting of the control unit.
Before the first start, check that:
- the ECU numbers and software match the vehicle,
- the BSI or BCM and the key come from the same car,
- the battery is charged,
- the power supply, grounds and CAN communication are working,
- the cause of the old control unit's failure has been eliminated.
Depending on the equipment, after the first start telecoding of the air conditioning, cruise control, gearbox, Start-Stop system or other functions may be needed. Citroën diagnostics and configuration use, among others, the Diagbox system.
Repair or replacement of a SID208 control unit
A SID208 failure can be caused by damage to the power supply, CAN communication or memory contents, by failed programming or by corrosion of the electronics. Before buying another ECU, it is worth checking whether repair or data recovery is possible.
Depending on the condition of the control unit, it may be possible to:
- repair the electronics,
- restore the correct software,
- read the data in bench or boot mode,
- clone it to a compatible control unit,
- use a VIRGIN module,
- prepare a Plug & Play version.
More information is in the article: SID208 Jumper, Boxer and Ducato – repair or replace?.
VIRGIN, Plug & Play, IMMO OFF and cloning
Citroën control units can be available in different preparation variants:
- VIRGIN – a control unit cleared of the previous vehicle's data and prepared for adaptation,
- Plug & Play – a module prepared in advance for a specific car or fitting method,
- IMMO OFF – the immobiliser function disabled in the ECU, where the design allows it,
- cloning – transferring data from the old control unit to a compatible replacement module.
Not every control unit supports all variants. Information on the preparation method and the steps needed after fitting is in the description of each product.
Cloning a Citroën control unit
Cloning means transferring data from the original ECU to a second, compatible module. Depending on the design, data is copied from the EEPROM, FLASH, the processor or other areas that store the vehicle configuration.
A complete clone can keep the VIN, immobiliser data, software and configuration of the original car. The service is only possible when the data from the old control unit can be read correctly and the replacement module is suitably compatible.
Citroën control unit manufacturers
Citroën cars use control units from different manufacturers. Our range includes, among others:
Delphi, Siemens and Magneti Marelli modules are also available. The manufacturer or ECU family name is not enough to confirm compatibility; always compare the full part numbers.
Most common symptoms of a faulty Citroën ECU
- the vehicle cannot be started,
- the engine cuts out by itself,
- no diagnostic communication with the ECU,
- limp mode and reduced power,
- injector or ignition control faults,
- turbocharger control problems,
- immobiliser faults or faults in communication with the BSI,
- CAN bus faults,
- problems after interrupted programming,
- damage caused by moisture, a short circuit or a voltage surge.
These symptoms do not automatically confirm a faulty ECU. They can also be caused by problems with the power supply, ground, wiring, the BSI module, sensors or actuators.
What to check before replacing the control unit?
Before fitting another ECU, check:
- the control unit's power supply and grounds,
- fuses and relays,
- wiring harnesses and connectors,
- CAN communication between the ECU and the BSI,
- the alternator charging voltage,
- actuators that could cause a short circuit,
- signs of moisture, oil and corrosion.
If the cause of the old control unit's failure is not eliminated, the next module may also be damaged.
Help choosing a Citroën control unit
If you are not sure which ECU is right, send a clear photo of the whole label of the old control unit, the VIN, the car model, year of manufacture, engine code, and details of the gearbox and equipment.
Based on this, the numbers can be checked and it can be decided whether the right solution is a VIRGIN, IMMO OFF or Plug & Play control unit, a module for programming, or data cloning.
Before ordering, also check the delivery times and costs and the available payment methods.
Can't find your number?
Send us a photo of the whole label of the original part, the VIN and the car model. We will check compatibility and availability.

FAQ – Citroën engine control units
Does an ordinary used Citroën control unit work after plugging it in?
Usually not. A used ECU may contain the immobiliser data, VIN and configuration of the previous car. It may need programming, cloning, VIRGIN preparation or IMMO OFF.
How do I choose the right Citroën engine control unit?
Compare the full manufacturer number and the PSA number from the label of the old ECU. Also take into account the control unit family, HW/SW version, engine code, gearbox and vehicle equipment.
What is the difference between VIRGIN and Plug & Play?
VIRGIN means a control unit cleared of the previous car's data and prepared for new adaptation. Plug & Play is a module prepared in advance to reduce or eliminate programming after fitting. The exact requirements depend on the specific product.
Will a SID208 VIRGIN start a Citroën Jumper?
A correctly prepared and compatible SID208 VIRGIN can take the immobiliser data from the BSI or BCM at the first start. The control unit must have the right numbers and software, and the vehicle's CAN communication and power supply must be working.
Is telecoding needed after fitting a SID208?
It may be. If the control unit configuration differs from the vehicle's equipment, check settings such as air conditioning, cruise control, gearbox and Start-Stop with suitable diagnostic equipment.
Can a Citroën engine control unit be cloned?
On many designs it can. You need a compatible replacement module and a complete data read from the old ECU. Whether cloning is possible depends on the type of control unit and how badly it is damaged.
Can a control unit be chosen by VIN alone?
The VIN is supporting information, but the numbers on the label of the fitted ECU remain the most important. The safest option is to send a photo of the control unit together with the VIN.
Is Diagbox needed to program a Citroën?
Diagbox is used for diagnostics, adaptation and telecoding of Citroën and Peugeot cars. Whether it will be needed after replacing the ECU depends on the type of control unit and how it has been prepared.
