Engine Control Units (ECUs) – Car Engine Computers

Products: 1080

Tested Engine Control Units (ECUs) for Cars and Vans

At ECUSALE, you can find tested engine control units (ECUs), also known as engine computers, engine management modules or ECMs, for passenger cars, vans and light commercial vehicles. We offer original modules from manufacturers such as Bosch, Delphi, Continental, Siemens VDO, Magneti Marelli, Denso and Valeo.

Our catalogue includes ECUs for many vehicle makes, including Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Opel, Fiat, Peugeot, Citroën, Ford and Renault.

How do I find the correct ECU?

Search using the complete OEM number and manufacturer part number shown on the original module. The vehicle model, production year or engine capacity alone may not be sufficient because several ECU versions can be used in the same vehicle.

Each engine control unit is checked before dispatch according to the technical capabilities of its platform. Depending on the part number, immobiliser system and vehicle configuration, selected modules may be supplied as VIRGIN, IMMO OFF or Plug & Play. ECU cloning using data from the original module is also available for compatible units.

Cannot find your part number? Send us a clear photo of the complete original ECU label and your VIN through our contact page. We will help verify compatibility and recommend the appropriate preparation option.

How to Identify the Correct ECU by Part Number

The safest way to select a replacement engine control unit is to compare the complete label of the original ECU. A vehicle make, model, production year or engine capacity does not confirm compatibility by itself.

Before ordering, compare:

  • the vehicle manufacturer’s OEM part number,
  • the ECU manufacturer’s reference number,
  • the complete ECU family and hardware designation,
  • hardware and software versions where available,
  • engine type, capacity, power output and fuel system,
  • emissions standard and transmission type,
  • immobiliser generation and vehicle equipment.

The VIN helps identify the vehicle, but it should be checked together with the numbers printed on the original engine computer.

Do not match an ECU by appearance alone

Two modules can use the same housing and connectors but contain different hardware, software or immobiliser data. Always compare the complete numbers before installation.

Leading ECU Manufacturers

ECUSALE offers original engine control units produced by major automotive electronics manufacturers, including:

Manufacturer families are not automatically interchangeable. Compatibility depends on the complete OEM number, hardware, software and vehicle configuration.

What Does an Engine Control Unit Do?

The engine control unit receives information from sensors and controls essential engine functions. Depending on the vehicle, it may manage:

  • fuel injection and ignition timing,
  • turbocharger boost pressure,
  • air and fuel mixture,
  • EGR operation and DPF regeneration,
  • throttle position and idle speed,
  • injector coding and fuel pressure,
  • communication with the immobiliser and other control modules,
  • diagnostic trouble codes and emergency operating modes.

Common Symptoms of a Faulty ECU

  • the engine does not start or starts intermittently,
  • no diagnostic communication with the engine controller,
  • engine stalling while driving,
  • limp mode or reduced engine power,
  • injector, ignition, turbocharger or fuel-pressure faults,
  • immobiliser or CAN communication errors,
  • problems after water, moisture or fuel contamination,
  • damage after a short circuit, voltage spike or reversed battery connection,
  • a no-start condition after interrupted ECU programming.

These symptoms can also be caused by damaged wiring, sensors, relays, fuses, poor power or ground connections, or another vehicle module. The vehicle should be properly diagnosed before replacing its ECU.

Why Do Engine Control Units Fail?

ECU failures can result from water ingress, corrosion, fuel or oil contamination, overheating, damaged wiring, short circuits, unstable voltage or interrupted programming. Before fitting a replacement module, the original cause should be identified so the replacement ECU is not exposed to the same fault.

Our technical guides provide additional information about common symptoms of ECU failure, water-damaged engine controllers and fuel-contaminated diesel ECUs.

ECU Programming and Preparation Options

A replacement engine computer is not always ready to operate after being connected. The required preparation depends on the ECU family, immobiliser system, software and vehicle configuration.

Option What it means
VIRGIN ECU The previous vehicle’s data has been cleared. Some compatible ECUs can learn immobiliser data after installation, while others require diagnostic programming, adaptation or coding. Always follow the instructions in the product description.
Plug & Play The ECU is prepared for a specific vehicle to reduce the work required after installation. Depending on the module, preparation may require the original ECU or memory files supplied by the customer.
IMMO OFF Immobiliser authorisation is disabled inside a supported ECU. This option is available only for selected hardware and software versions. An immobiliser warning or fault stored in another module may remain.
ECU cloning Compatible data from the original controller is transferred to a matching replacement ECU. This may preserve the VIN, immobiliser information, coding, configuration and engine software.

VIRGIN does not automatically mean Plug & Play. A VIRGIN controller may still require programming, adaptation, injector coding or other configuration after installation.

What Data Is Needed for ECU Cloning?

Cloning requirements depend on the ECU platform. Preparation may require:

  • the original engine control unit,
  • EEPROM, FLASH or MPC files,
  • a complete bench or boot-mode read,
  • the VIN and vehicle details,
  • information about the engine, transmission and equipment.

If the original ECU is heavily damaged, cloning may not be possible. In that case, a compatible VIRGIN, IMMO OFF or separately programmed replacement may be required.

Repair, Clone or Replace the ECU?

Situation Possible solution
The original ECU is readable and a compatible donor is available Cloning may transfer the original data to the replacement module.
The original ECU cannot be read A VIRGIN, IMMO OFF or separately programmed controller may be required.
The ECU has water, corrosion or fuel damage Replacement is often safer, but data recovery may still be possible in selected cases.
Only wiring, power supply or a sensor is faulty Repair the vehicle fault before considering ECU replacement.

Tested Replacement Engine Computers

Every module is checked before dispatch according to the technical possibilities of its platform. Product descriptions identify the available preparation option and whether additional information, files or the original ECU are required.

Because one part number can sometimes appear with several OEM references or software versions, always compare the complete label and read the conditions of the selected offer before ordering.

Why Buy an ECU from ECUSALE?

  • original engine control units from recognised manufacturers,
  • modules checked before dispatch,
  • OEM and manufacturer references included in product descriptions,
  • clear information about VIRGIN, IMMO OFF, Plug & Play and cloning options,
  • compatibility assistance based on the original ECU label and VIN,
  • warranty according to the shop’s applicable terms,
  • national and international delivery.

Before ordering, you can review our payment methods, shipping costs and delivery times and returns and complaints policy.

Ask Us to Check Your ECU Numbers

FAQ – Engine Control Units

Does a replacement ECU need identical part numbers?

The safest option is an ECU with an identical OEM number and compatible manufacturer reference. Some modules have valid replacement or superseding numbers, but their compatibility should be confirmed before purchase.

Will a used ECU work after it is connected?

An ordinary used ECU normally contains immobiliser and configuration data from the previous vehicle. It may need to be cloned, reset to VIRGIN, prepared as Plug & Play or modified as IMMO OFF where supported.

Is a VIRGIN ECU ready to start the engine?

Not always. Some VIRGIN ECUs can learn immobiliser data after installation, while others require diagnostic adaptation, programming or coding. Check the instructions provided with the specific product.

What is the difference between VIRGIN and Plug & Play?

A VIRGIN ECU has been cleared of the previous vehicle’s data and still needs to be assigned to a compatible vehicle. A Plug & Play ECU is prepared for a specific application to reduce the work required after installation.

Can every ECU be prepared as IMMO OFF?

No. IMMO OFF is available only for selected ECU families and software versions. Its availability must be confirmed for the exact part number.

Can a damaged ECU be cloned?

Cloning may be possible if the required memory data can still be read from the original module. If the electronics or memory are severely damaged, a VIRGIN, IMMO OFF or separately programmed replacement may be necessary.

Can I select an ECU using only the VIN?

The VIN helps identify the vehicle, but it does not always identify the exact hardware and software installed. A clear photo of the complete original ECU label should also be provided.

What information should I send before ordering?

Send a clear photo of the complete ECU label, the VIN, vehicle make and model, production year, engine capacity and power, transmission type, relevant equipment details and diagnostic fault codes.
