Renault ECU engine controllers – tested replacement modules

A Renault ECU engine controller, also known as an engine control unit, engine computer or injection control module, manages essential petrol or diesel engine functions. Depending on the vehicle, it controls fuel injection, ignition, turbocharger operation, EGR, DPF regeneration and communication with the immobiliser and other electronic modules.

At ECUSale, you can find original engine controllers for Renault passenger cars and commercial vehicles, including the Clio, Megane, Scenic, Laguna, Captur, Kadjar, Koleos, Espace, Trafic, Master and Mascott. Availability depends on the complete Renault OEM number, ECU manufacturer, engine version, hardware reference and installed software.

Not sure which Renault ECU is compatible?

Send us a clear photograph of the complete label from your original ECU together with the vehicle’s VIN. We will compare the numbers and help determine whether you need a VIRGIN, IMMO OFF, Plug & Play or cloned controller.

Renault Master and Trafic VIRGIN ECU engine controllers

A significant part of our Renault range consists of controllers for the Renault Master, Trafic and Mascott. Some of these modules are also used in related Opel and Nissan commercial vehicles, including the Opel Vivaro, Opel Movano and Nissan Primastar.

Shared engine platforms do not make every controller interchangeable. The Renault number, Bosch number, hardware, software and engine specification must all be checked before purchase.

0281011277 / 8200391957 / 8200404535 – Renault Master and Trafic

The 0281011277 / 8200391957 / 8200404535 Bosch engine controller is used in selected Renault Master, Renault Trafic, Renault Mascott and related Opel Vivaro applications.

The offered controller is prepared as VIRGIN and Plug & Play. In a compatible vehicle, the reset module can retrieve the required immobiliser information during its first installation. The complete numbers and engine version must still match the original ECU.

0281011890 / 8200091517 – Renault Master and Trafic ECU

Another available replacement is the 0281011890 / 8200091517 Renault Master and Trafic VIRGIN ECU. This original Bosch engine controller has been cleared of the previous vehicle’s immobiliser data and prepared for installation in a compatible vehicle.

Before ordering, compare both identification numbers and check the engine type, power output and vehicle configuration. A similar Bosch casing or connector arrangement does not confirm compatibility.

0281012658 / 8200666516 – Trafic, Vivaro and Primastar

The 0281012658 / 8200666516 VIRGIN engine controller is intended for selected Renault Trafic, Opel Vivaro and Nissan Primastar diesel vehicles.

These vehicles share many mechanical and electronic systems, but several ECU hardware and software versions were fitted. Compare the complete Bosch and vehicle manufacturer numbers rather than choosing the replacement by model or engine capacity alone.

0281014208 / 8200666516 / 8200752059 – Renault commercial vehicles

The 0281014208 / 8200666516 / 8200752059 VIRGIN ECU is available for compatible Renault Master, Trafic and Mascott applications as well as selected Opel Vivaro vehicles.

Although the Renault number 8200666516 may also appear with other Bosch references, this does not mean that all such controllers are identical. Check the Bosch number, hardware revision, engine code and software calibration.

Renault Trafic 2.0 dCi engine controllers

Renault Trafic II 2.0 dCi vehicles use several Bosch ECU versions. Modules with similar Renault references can differ in their hardware or engine software, so the complete identification must be compared before fitting a replacement.

0281017065 / 8200935115 – Renault Trafic 2.0 dCi

The 0281017065 / 8200935115 Renault Trafic 2.0 dCi ECU is supplied in a VIRGIN version prepared for installation in a compatible vehicle.

Before purchase, compare all numbers from the original module, including any additional Renault references such as 8201105714. Engine power, emissions equipment, gearbox specification and software version may affect compatibility.

Looking for a Renault Master or Trafic ECU?

Do not select the replacement by model and engine capacity alone. Compare the complete Renault number, Bosch reference, hardware version and engine specification.

Renault Clio petrol and diesel ECU modules

Renault Clio vehicles use different engine management systems depending on the generation, engine and emissions standard. These include Magneti Marelli IAW controllers for selected petrol engines and Continental or Siemens diesel modules.

IAW 5NR2.C2 ECU for Renault Clio II 1.2 16V

The 8200181482 / 8200229098 IAW 5NR2.C2 ECU is intended for selected Renault Clio II 1.2 16V petrol vehicles. The Magneti Marelli controller is prepared as VIRGIN and Plug & Play.

Several IAW 5NR variants were used in Renault vehicles. The full designation, including letters and suffixes such as C2 or T1, must be checked. Similar-looking IAW modules are not automatically interchangeable.

Continental SID310 ECU for Renault Clio 1.5 dCi

Selected Renault Clio 1.5 dCi vehicles use Continental SID310 engine controllers. Compatibility depends on the full Renault OEM number, Continental reference, hardware generation, engine software and emissions configuration.

A VIRGIN SID310 module has been cleared of the previous vehicle’s immobiliser data, but installation may still require an appropriate diagnostic procedure. Always follow the instructions stated on the individual product page.

Renault ECU compatibility with Opel and Nissan

Renault commercial vehicles share many engines and electronic systems with Opel and Nissan. As a result, the same Bosch ECU may be listed for the Renault Trafic, Opel Vivaro and Nissan Primastar, or for the Renault Master and Opel Movano.

This cross-brand use is only possible when the controller’s complete identification and technical specification match. The following should be checked:

  • Renault, Opel or Nissan OEM number,
  • Bosch or other manufacturer number,
  • ECU hardware version,
  • engine code, capacity and power output,
  • emissions standard and DPF configuration,
  • manual or automatic gearbox specification,
  • installed software and vehicle equipment.

You can also browse our Opel ECU engine controllers and Nissan ECU engine controllers.

How to select the correct Renault ECU

The safest method is to compare every number printed on the label of the original engine controller. The vehicle model, production year and engine capacity alone are insufficient because Renault used several ECU variations in otherwise similar vehicles.

Before ordering, compare:

  • the complete Renault OEM number,
  • the Bosch, Continental, Siemens or Magneti Marelli number,
  • the complete ECU family and hardware designation,
  • hardware and software versions,
  • engine code, capacity, fuel type and power output,
  • emissions standard and DPF configuration,
  • gearbox type and vehicle equipment,
  • the preparation method offered for the replacement ECU.

The VIN helps identify the vehicle and its original configuration, but it does not replace the numbers printed on the ECU. A clear photograph of the complete label is usually the most useful information for checking a replacement.

Renault VIRGIN ECU – how does it work?

A VIRGIN Renault ECU has been cleared of the immobiliser and vehicle-specific information stored during its previous use. The module is prepared for reassignment in a compatible vehicle.

Many correctly prepared Renault VIRGIN controllers can retrieve the required immobiliser data when they are installed and the vehicle is started for the first time. The exact procedure depends on the ECU family and vehicle generation. Some modules may still require Renault CAN Clip or another suitable diagnostic tool for configuration, VIN entry, injector coding or adaptation.

Once the controller has been assigned to a vehicle, it is no longer VIRGIN. It should therefore not be installed for testing in a different vehicle. Maintain a stable battery voltage during the first-start and programming procedure.

Renault ECU Plug & Play and cloning

A Plug & Play Renault ECU has been prepared using the method described on its individual product page. Depending on the controller, this may mean a VIRGIN reset, an IMMO OFF solution or data cloned from the original ECU.

Cloning involves transferring the required memory content from the original controller to a compatible replacement. Depending on the ECU architecture, this may include EEPROM, FLASH and processor data. A complete clone can retain:

  • immobiliser information,
  • vehicle identification number,
  • engine software and calibration,
  • injector coding,
  • vehicle configuration.

Cloning normally requires the original ECU to remain readable. If the controller is severely damaged and its memory cannot be recovered, a compatible VIRGIN or IMMO OFF replacement may be required.

Renault ECU IMMO OFF

IMMO OFF means that the immobiliser function has been disabled in a compatible engine controller. A correctly prepared module may allow the engine to start without carrying out the standard ECU-to-immobiliser synchronisation.

Not every Renault ECU supports IMMO OFF. The replacement controller must still have the correct hardware and engine software. Depending on the vehicle, an immobiliser warning or related diagnostic fault may remain in another module even when the engine starts and operates correctly.

Common symptoms of a faulty Renault ECU

  • the engine cranks but does not start,
  • intermittent starting or unexpected engine cut-out,
  • no diagnostic communication with the ECU,
  • injector control faults,
  • limp mode and reduced engine power,
  • turbocharger, EGR or DPF-related control faults,
  • immobiliser or CAN communication errors,
  • irregular engine operation or misfiring,
  • a no-start condition after interrupted programming,
  • damage following water ingress, a short circuit or voltage surge.

These symptoms do not automatically confirm ECU failure. Similar problems may be caused by wiring damage, poor power or earth connections, fuses, relays, sensors, injectors or communication faults involving another module.

Checks before replacing a Renault ECU

Before purchasing another controller, check the ECU power supply, earth connections, fuses, relays, wiring continuity and CAN communication. Diagnostic fault codes should be read from all available vehicle modules.

If the original ECU still communicates, save its identification, injector codes and configuration before removing it. Keep the original controller until the replacement has been installed successfully, as its memory may still be needed for cloning or comparison.

FAQ – Renault ECU engine controllers

Does a Renault ECU need identical part numbers?

The safest option is a controller with the same complete Renault OEM number and a matching manufacturer number. Some compatible replacements or superseded numbers may exist, but they should be confirmed before purchase.

Will an ordinary used Renault ECU work after connection?

An ordinary used controller generally contains immobiliser and configuration data from its previous vehicle. It may prevent the engine from starting unless it is reset as VIRGIN, cloned, adapted or prepared as IMMO OFF.

Does a Renault VIRGIN ECU program itself?

Many correctly prepared Renault VIRGIN controllers can retrieve the required immobiliser data during the first installation. Depending on the ECU and vehicle, additional configuration, injector coding or a diagnostic procedure may still be necessary.

What does Plug & Play mean for a Renault ECU?

It means that the controller has been prepared using the method stated on its product page to reduce the work required after installation. It may be VIRGIN, cloned or prepared as IMMO OFF.

Can an Opel Vivaro ECU be used in a Renault Trafic?

Some Renault Trafic and Opel Vivaro vehicles use the same ECU type. Compatibility still depends on the complete OEM and manufacturer numbers, hardware, software, engine version and equipment.

Which ECU fits a Renault Trafic 2.0 dCi?

The correct controller depends on the original Renault and Bosch numbers, engine version and software. The 8200935115 / 0281017065 module is used in selected Trafic 2.0 dCi vehicles, but the complete identification must be checked.

Can a damaged Renault ECU be cloned?

Cloning may be possible if the required data can still be read from the original module and a compatible replacement is available. Severe processor, EEPROM or FLASH damage may prevent a complete clone.

What information should I send before buying a Renault ECU?

Send a clear photograph of the complete ECU label, the VIN, vehicle model and year, engine code and capacity, power output, gearbox type, equipment information and diagnostic fault codes.
