How to select the correct Peugeot engine ECU
The correct replacement must be selected primarily by using the complete numbers printed on the original ECU label. Different hardware and software versions may have been installed in vehicles with the same model, production year and engine.
Before ordering, check:
- the complete ECU manufacturer number,
- the complete PSA OEM number,
- the ECU family, such as SID208, EDC16, EDC17, ME7.4.5, MEV17.4 or MED17.4,
- hardware and software references, where shown,
- engine code, capacity and power output,
- manual or automatic transmission type,
- emissions standard and vehicle equipment,
- the VIN as supporting information.
The VIN can help identify the vehicle’s original specification, but it does not always identify the exact ECU currently fitted. The safest approach is to provide the VIN together with a clear photograph of the complete controller label.
SID208 ECUs for Peugeot Boxer 2.2 HDi
Selected Peugeot Boxer 2.2 HDi vehicles use Continental SID208 engine controllers. Related versions are also fitted to Citroën Jumper and Fiat Ducato vans with compatible 2.2 diesel engines.

How does a SID208 VIRGIN ECU work?
A correctly prepared SID208 VIRGIN ECU has been cleared of the previous vehicle’s immobiliser data. During the first correct installation in a compatible vehicle, it can receive and store the required immobiliser information from the BSI system.
Before the first start, make sure that:
- the ECU has the correct part numbers and software,
- the vehicle’s BSI and key are working correctly,
- the battery is fully charged and its voltage remains stable,
- the ECU power supplies and earth connections are correct,
- CAN communication between the ECU and BSI is operational,
- the fault that damaged the original ECU has been repaired.

After the immobiliser has been assigned, additional configuration may still be required for equipment such as air conditioning, cruise control, transmission type or Start-Stop. Starting the engine does not necessarily confirm that every vehicle option has been configured correctly.
Replacing a Peugeot Boxer SID208 ECU?
Do not connect the replacement controller until the power supplies, earth points, CAN wiring and ECU installation area have been checked. Any active water leak or electrical fault may damage the replacement module.

SID208 repair, replacement or cloning
SID208 controllers can fail because of water ingress, corrosion, power-supply problems, voltage surges, CAN faults or interrupted programming. The correct solution depends on the type and extent of the damage.
Depending on the condition of the original module, it may be possible to:
- repair the damaged electronics,
- restore corrupted software,
- read the ECU in bench or boot mode,
- clone its data into a compatible replacement,
- use a correctly matched VIRGIN controller,
- prepare a Plug & Play replacement.
A localised electronic fault may be repairable. If water has caused extensive corrosion underneath the processor, memory components or within the internal PCB layers, replacement with a tested VIRGIN ECU may be a more reliable solution.

Peugeot petrol ECUs – ME7.4.5, MEV17.4 and MED17.4

The 0261S04008 / 9664738780 Bosch MEV17.4 ECU is offered for selected Peugeot and Citroën 1.4 and 1.6 applications. The module is prepared as IMMO OFF and Plug & Play.
Before ordering, compare both the Bosch number and the complete PSA reference. The MEV17.4 family contains many variants that are not automatically interchangeable.
0261S04026 / 9664618380 – Peugeot 207 1.6 VTi VIRGIN ECU

Peugeot ECU preparation options
The correct preparation method depends on the ECU design, condition of the original controller and vehicle requirements.
- VIRGIN – data from the previous vehicle is removed and the controller is prepared for reassignment or first adaptation.
- IMMO OFF – the immobiliser function is disabled inside a compatible ECU.
- Plug & Play – the module is prepared in advance to reduce the work required after installation.
- Cloning – data from the original ECU is transferred to a technically compatible replacement controller.
Not every Peugeot controller supports every preparation method. Read the individual product description to confirm whether the ECU requires first adaptation, programming, cloning, telecoding or additional vehicle data.
Cloning a Peugeot engine controller
Cloning involves transferring data from the original ECU to a compatible replacement. Depending on the controller design, this may include EEPROM, FLASH, processor data and other memory areas containing the immobiliser information, VIN, software and vehicle configuration.
A successful clone requires a complete, valid read from the original controller and a replacement module with compatible hardware. If the processor or memory in the old ECU is seriously damaged, a full clone may not be possible. In this situation, a VIRGIN module or in-vehicle programming may be required.
Peugeot ECU IMMO OFF
IMMO OFF disables the immobiliser function inside a compatible engine ECU. This can allow the engine to start without the standard ECU-to-BSI immobiliser synchronisation.
IMMO OFF does not make an incompatible ECU suitable for the vehicle. The PSA number, manufacturer reference, hardware, software and engine application must still match. Depending on the vehicle and controller, an immobiliser-related warning or fault code may remain in the BSI or instrument cluster.
Peugeot ECU programming and Diagbox
Whether Diagbox or another professional diagnostic system is required depends on the Peugeot model, ECU family and preparation method. Diagnostic equipment may be needed for:
- fault diagnosis and communication checks,
- ECU configuration and telecoding,
- injector coding,
- equipment configuration,
- adaptation or synchronisation procedures,
- checking communication between the ECU and BSI.
A controller supplied as IMMO OFF or Plug & Play may not require standard immobiliser adaptation, but its vehicle configuration should still be checked after installation.
Peugeot and Citroën ECU compatibility

Common symptoms of a faulty Peugeot ECU
- the engine does not start or starts intermittently,
- the engine cuts out while driving,
- no diagnostic communication with the ECU,
- limp mode and reduced engine power,
- injector or fuel-pressure control faults,
- turbocharger control problems,
- immobiliser or BSI communication errors,
- CAN communication faults,
- problems after interrupted programming,
- damage caused by water, corrosion, a short circuit or voltage surge.
These symptoms do not prove that the ECU itself is defective. Similar faults can be caused by damaged wiring, missing power supplies, poor earth connections, faulty sensors, actuators, fuses, relays or a problem with the BSI. The vehicle should be properly diagnosed before replacing the engine controller.
What should be checked before fitting another ECU?
Before connecting a replacement Peugeot controller, check:
- permanent and ignition-switched ECU power supplies,
- engine and body earth connections,
- fuses and relays,
- the wiring harness and ECU connectors,
- CAN communication between the ECU and BSI,
- battery and alternator voltage,
- injectors, actuators and other components that may cause a short circuit,
- signs of water, moisture, oil or corrosion.
An undetected vehicle fault may damage the replacement ECU or cause exactly the same symptoms after installation.
ECU fault or Peugeot ABS problem?

Will a used Peugeot ECU work immediately after installation?
An ordinary used controller normally contains immobiliser and configuration data from its previous vehicle. It may require cloning, programming, VIRGIN preparation or IMMO OFF. Only an appropriately prepared and compatible ECU may work without standard adaptation.
How do I select the correct Peugeot engine controller?
